What do I bring for plebe summer?

Black shows through summer whites. According to my son, it really doesn't matter that white underwear and compression shorts get dingy in laundry...no matter how "grey" they look, nobody cares. They still won't show through summer whites.
For what its worth, my DS USNA 2023 says, he only wears black compression shorts (even under summer whites). He says the black might show through a little under summer whites, but unlikely anyone will say something. Black compression shorts will not show through White Works. You will only wear summer whites at the very end of PS-can use white underwear then (even if they are a little gray).

You'll get chapstick, sunscreen and moisturizer in the big kit you get on I-day. Unless you have allergies, you don't need anything. Have your parents send your favorite brands in care packages.

You can have electric toothbrush after Plebe summer. Right as you finish Plebe summer, you'll ask parents for what you need: Noise cancelling headphones, watches, wireless earbuds, sunglasses, electric toothbrushes--all come flooding in from parents all over the country. Since the $$ total for that package can be pretty high, many parents opted to ship to the sponsor rather than risk the black hole that was USNA PO COVID year.
How do care packages work? Should parents wait a while or could they in theory send a care package a week into Plebe Summer or less?

Send early...takes time to get packages. Mail service at USNA is not a strength there.

The standard wisdom is to send your first care package on I-Day. But I'm pretty sure they don't distribute care packages (even if they arrive) until about a week into PS, so this may not be that good of an ides. Different Companies treat mail distribution differently. Some have the plebes open their Care packages in front of the detailers so they know they are not receiving contraband (sealed envelopes are not part of this observation). Candy is often confiscated (as opposed to energy bars, which are okay - some detailers confiscate In Kind energy bars because some contain hemp seeds). Caffeine containing energy bars are typically not allowed.

Last year the mail room was a charlie foxtrot. Based on that, I wouldn't recommend sending anything.
Maybe this year will be different. Surely this year will be different.

I know. Don't call me Shirley.

It’s never different 😂 Only varying degrees of bad. And it’s not only the result of having two employees (Postal, not USNA), but also bottlenecks from general Post Office issues. Throw in a hurricane, derecho, striking employees? And stuff sits in transit before it even makes it to USNA.

Last year WAS epic! AddING the the entire brigade locked on the yard, and the only way to get stuff was via mail. We literally had Mids receiving packages from plebe summer after they returned from semester break.

Sponsors are THE BEST for this, as it’s always an issue. Hopefully not as “epic” as last year, though. Last year was unbelievable....no, it was ‘unprecedented’

We sent our first package after we dropped DS off last summer before we got on the plane to head back. He actually received it July 2nd. It was the only package all semester that was delivered relatively quickly. He even got some letters / packages sent during Plebe Summer that didn't arrive until well into the academic year. They confiscated strange things, too - some detailers let him keep Gatorade protein bars, but other detailers wouldn't let him have them. They confiscated the foam roller we sent. All depends on the company.

While you are breaking in the pair you will wear, break in ANOTHER pair you will leave at home for your parents to send in a care package or bring with them when they visit. My son refused to do this and regretted it.
Are you permitted to bring two pairs of running shoes to I-Day?

Yes. Absolutely. They may put the extra pair with your stuff you don't get back until PPW, but you can bring them.
Do you NEED a second pair with you on I-Day?

That's the question. I think the answer is no.

My DS just took the pair on his feet when he reported. He was issued two additional pair. That was enough for him to get through Plebe Summer, but everyone is different.

Of course, there are also parents who send few or even (gasp!) no packages during plebe summer. Talk to veteran family members or neighbors about the trials and tribulations that they faced in basic training and how many packages they received. Most will tell you one or none. I was a member of our local parents club and then on a list with my son's USNA Company parents so I've certainly seen how many approach this. I knew that my family loved me and seriously, there was no magic box from home that would have made Plebe Summer easier for me. I think we sent my son one box during his plebe summer and he seemed to have weathered it OK and still seems to like us.

I was at a USNA Parents Club event recently when one alumni parent's speech included mentioning sending hundreds of packages so that every
person in his daughter's command got one and this was not on just one occasion.

I know that the USNA issues everything that will be needed, but I was wondering if there was anything at all that I am allowed to bring that would be useful to me. Also any tips for surviving plebe summer would be appreciated.
Bring your mental "A" game. Just follow the workout package. Make sure you run on a track and or road. Too many Plebes get shin splints because they did not follow directions. GET EXCITED, it will be tough, rewarding and a builder of character. Beat Army!

Run on hard surfaces so you do not get shin splints. Hobbling around on crutches is a bummer!

Sorry for all of the questions, but I don't want to purchase and bring something I can't use. Do the compression shorts have to be completely plain, or can they have a brand name in white or grey on the waistband? Also, what length inseam should I be purchasing? Thanks in advance!

.
... bring some leftover Halloween Candy ... as in a pillow case or satchel full.

I can attest to this, our DS ran through the requisite chin splints and ended up with dual long bone stress fractures. Despite good shoes, and having run for six months to prepare for plebe summer. Crutches, medical appointments, physical therapy all things that suck precious time out of the plebe academic year.

Note to plebes, pay attention to your body and do not continue to run if you are in major pain.

Logos are OK, as long as they’re fairly subtle, e.g. on the waistband. As for inseam, that’s up to you, based on comfort level (and fashion sense 😉).
