Which college do you suggest?

Hi everyone, I applied to these colleges and I was wondering which one do you suggest:

1) NORWICH UNIVERSITY

2) THE CITADEL

3) HAWAII PACIFIC UNIVERSITY

4) UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT

5) CAL STATE UNIV LONG BEACH

Hawaii looks very appealing but the school is very small, and many people warned me about the "Rock fever effect". The weather and the nature is stunning though and I'm so curious about such a distant and exotic place (Literally the other side of the world from where I live)

Because The Citadel is in South Carolina the weather is more appealing but I heard many stories about hazing.

Norwich looks great I like the environment, but the weather is terrible, I don't know if 5 months of snow is something for me considering that I come from a place where people literally swim during winter because of the temperature.

The major that I was looking for is offered at Vermont University with a great combination of courses but has the same problem as Norwich University (the Weather).

Finally, CAL STATE UNIV LONG BEACH has great reviews, but I didn't receive an acceptance letter yet, and I don't know much about the environment yet or the area.

(PS: all these universities have the major I am looking for)

You get used to the weather in the north country of the US. In the regions you discuss it's generally a dry cold which is much more pleasant than a damp cold. It's because all the water vapor is frozen and not hanging in the air.

I went to college in the St Lawrence valley in a small town called Potsdam, NY. There is a great engineering school there with a ROTC unit... Clarkson University. I went to the State school across town. The campus was laid out so that buildings were not far apart.... and you could essentially walk from building to building with very little time outside. I don't know about Norwich or Vermont but you might find that ot be the case there. At the snow offers opportunities for adventures. Snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, down hill skiing and sledding anyone?

Where are you from? Do you want to go home? I would place that over location.... My DS is 1500 miles from home for school so he doesn't get home as much as he would like. DD is 90 miles....We can do a round trip for lunch to see her...

If distance isn't an issue...what speaks to YOU? We get snow here, my DS enjoys Texas. He was waterskiing on a lake this weekend while we were shoveling snow...

ANT345: My advice - rephrase your question. No one but you can know which of the colleges on your list is a better fit for you - academically and otherwise. Better questions to ask (yourself after visiting and researching the colleges) might be:
- which of these colleges or universities offer the academic majors that interest me and in which I believe I will do my best?
- do I understand my personality well enough to know I would be more comfortable at a large university or small college campus?
- is the institution affordable and will my choice of major and career path allow me to easily pay back any loans I may have?
- I assume you have an ROTC scholarship? These pay for tuition, books and some fees plus a monthly stipend. They do not pay both tuition and room & board. What else does the college offer you in merit and/or financial aid? Some colleges on your list like The Citadel and Norwich offer full Room & Board to ROTC national scholarship cadets. Do others?
- realize both The Citadel and Norwich are Senior Military Colleges where you will participate in a Corps of Cadets 4 years. Are you prepared for this challenge - do you want this challenge?

best of luck

Hawaii Pacific.

I’ll give you a free surf lesson when you make it here.

That looks great! Do you mind if I ask you how the quality of life is down there? Many people on Reddit warned me of how an awful place Hawaii is, that is not for everyone etc. What is your opinion on that?

“Don’t get me started.”

Joking aside, people that opted to stay in Hawaii forever have a profound reason to stay… only they themselves can answer.

Those who decided to stay cited these: family, weather, island lifestyle, first class waves.

They learned quickly how to navigate around the idiosyncratic ways and means here.

Example: Drive your beat up car to the best surfing spots; avoid H1 highway (only highway connecting West to East) from 0500-0745 & 1500-1830; get use to observe homelessness in full display in Waikiki (no. 1 homeless state); pay for $5.75 gallon milk.

So I put up with all the idiosyncrasies in order to have access to first class waves.

To add to this piece, not sure if you have ever looked at the Fiske Guide to Colleges but of the various college resource books DS found it the most helpful in providing insights into the personality/culture of the school. If you haven't had a chance to visit in person, maybe check your library for a copy of Fiske to help compare options.

Thanks.

I see, coming from an Island myself (Sicily) but literally on the other side of the world I kinda experience a less severe version of Hawaii (Here stuff is more expensive than mainland Italy, people walk around in flip flops all the time, people are super laid back and no one works in the hottest hours of the day, and especially during summer people tend to spend most of their time in the evening because of the heat. Obviously, surf is less famous here Sigh  but many practice WindSurf like myself, or snorkeling). I think I almost never saw a homeless person here, but the government isn't doing a great job cleaning big cities though. As a comparison here 1 Gallon of Milk costs 2,30$ and 1 gallon of oil (for Cars) costs 7,25 $

I went to school in Northeast, hated the cold, even if I did get used to it eventually. I personally know multiple people who went to the Citadel and Norwich and had bad experiences; in large part due to the added stress/mental health that came with it. While that's obviously just my friends, just thought I'd add. Hawaii is deff expensive in terms of flying there and also price of products... honestly if that's your list I'd choose Cali!

Cal State Long Beach is a big school, good Engineering but really known for their arts program. Half commuter/half party school. Everyone I know that went there loved it. Big enough to find your niche. Good sized greek system.

Norwich. SMC. Small classes. Not many distractions. Most likely will throw scholarships at you. Government service recruits heavily. Birthplace of ROTC.

Perhaps my eyesight is failing me but were one of those locations in HAWAII ??????????

Hawaii??????

Really?????

Hey, one of my sons went to college in northern Vermont and had a good time. But if offered the chance to hang 10 in Hawaii I'm sure he would have reconsidered.

99% of Americans will never visit Hawaii. You might.

Given that you are from Italy, you would be right at home with the climate around Cal State Long Beach. Should you attend, you will find yourself pleased with the quality of education as well as the new experiences available to you with the cosmopolitan nature of Southern California. Granted, I am a bit biased, hailing from around that area myself.

I must add that their teaching program is absolutely exceptional (although I doubt OP is pursuing anything remotely like that), and their business and nursing programs are rather good.
