My DD received a LOA from USNA. On her nomination applications, she put Navy number 1 even though Air Force and Navy are tied to number 1. She is still deciding between the two. Since she has a LOA for her number 1, does that rule out much possibility getting a nom to the USAFA, her number 2? Could she say that she is still deciding and is a bit unsure in her interview, but knows she wants to attend a Service Academy and serve? thanks in advance!

Depends. Frequently, when they ask you to rank them, they will only give a nomination to one academy so they can spread the wealth. Doesn't hurt to inquire I guess. If it were me though, I'd be learning the Navy Hymn.

if it were me I wouldn't say I am not sure and still deciding during the interview because many times on the committee board are reps for each branch and although the AF rep might like the response, I would think the Navy rep would be wondering if the LOA was wasted if she also gets an apptmt to the AFA. The AFA rep may also with more time and additional candidate interviews may decide that these other 10 really, really, really wants the AFA so we will give them nom over here because she doesn't care and she has an LOA in hand.

My suggestion would be placing AF as number 1 on at least 1 nom, this way she is covering all of her bases.

    visit each

it is best to visit each and see which one they like best. Having done a CVW to USNA for DS, it helps them a lot.

This is a common dilemma, especially in very competitive congressional districts/states.

Your DD has to make a decision at some point. Is there some activity that she's waiting on (i.e., CVW) to help her along? If not, decide now. The danger in not having a strong preference is that she might: (1) not get a nom to what ends up being her first choice or, worse, (2) getting a nom but not an appointment to USAFA, or, even worse, (3) getting no nom at all and getting no appointment to either SA.

Generally, nom cttees like to give noms to LOA candidates b/c they know that person is thereby guaranteed an appt if medical/CFA are good. So, if this MOC only gives one nom to any SA, I would keep USNA as #1 unless she really doesn't want to go there.

Unless she has already put it on the application so that the board knows, I would not highlight the fact that she has an LOA to USNA unless specifically asked.

As USNA1985 points out, the danger is she fails to get a nomination to USNA or fails to get an appointment to USAFA. Despite what it may seem from these boards, an LOA to any academy is never assured.

BTW, you can always asked to have your academy rankings modified after the fact. Just call the academy rep.

    MOCs copied on LOA

Not sure if it is the case with all LOAs but DS's USNA LOA was copied to his MOCs (names of each Sen and Rep are on bottom of the first page). I would assume that the nominating committees are aware of the LOA going in and have responses to questions about first choice SA both referencing the LOA and not referencing the LOA depending upon how the question is asked.

IMHO, USNAmomAZ's DD should focus on getting the USNA nom since the LOA is in hand. There are many more noms given than appointments so the implication is that getting accepted by the academy is the limiting step.

    Good luck to DD, USNAmomAZ!
