I love being told by old teachers from high school
“oh honey, you were so smart in high school. Why did you go enlist? You were so much smarter than enlisting. You had so much going for you”

DS's school helps each student write a life plan and then helps each student with the classes to meet that goal. When DS said "US Naval Academy" every teacher every year assumed he was enlisting and didn't need college prep. This year one teacher even argued with him that he needed the ASVAB. DS eventually offered to come to a teacher inservice and train them on Service Academies...

    “But what if you die???”
“Will u get stationed in Afghanistan???”
“Air Force??? I thought you were afraid of heights!!”

Lol sometimes I say I’m applying to USNA and I get:
“But you have to work in submarines! They’re so (wait for it) SMALL!!”

I am so fond of this thread.

Of course, if you place an OHIO-class submarine length-wise, dripping wet, in a football field, it extends past by a bit. L=560 ft
Imagine sitting in the stands and seeing how awesome those subs really are.

As a work space goes, though, with no opportunity to step out for fresh air, I am sure it feels cramped, I have to grant that.

I once had a NAVY RECUITER tell me she had no idea what USNA was and to go ahead and take the ASVAB because I would for sure need to if it was a Navy thing...

"But Colonel...will the air force teach him a useful trade...I mean...once his time is up, and he's no longer in the military...what will he be able to do? Do they teach him anything useful?"

I was wearing a Naval Academy sweatshirt that I bought when I went to CVW and a guy at Starbucks asked me if I was from Indiana...

Took me a few seconds to realize he read Annapolis as Indianapolis. Still trying to figure out why he thought the Naval Academy was in a state nowhere near the ocean

Even better, we get asked which Abercrombie and Fitch store we get our AF stuff.

LOVE THIS THREAD - ITS A HOOT

I was checking out at a retailer last week and the person was making small talk about summer plans, I mentioned going to east coast to drop off DS for I-Day at Naval Acadamy, she had NO idea what that was... mentioned my DD at Air Force Acadamy, and the look on her face was precious, she had such great concern my kids were forced into military service at an “Acadamy” and not be able to experience a real college... Its was really quite enduring and still makes me smile to day.

At the checkout line last week, after picking up a cake that said "Best Wishes, Cadet ____, Class of '22".

So the young male cashier said "class of '22? Isn't it a little early?"

And I said "No, he is appointed to the United States Air Force academy as a member of the class of '22. He goes in this summer."

To which he replied, "Military? That's cool. Which branch?"

When I wore my t-shirt with the big AF, my girlfriend said, “Aren’t you too Old to wear Abercrombie and Fitch?”

My part time college job in '86 took me to Groton where we worked underneath the graving docks welding on anodes overhead from a 2 man work barge. Boomer under construction up top - those boats are BIG. [Would have been a good episode for 'Dirty Jobs.' Tough day.] Turned down a job offer from Electric Boat upon graduation.

Time for the annual refresh of this thread, as we see the appointment lists grow and approach the upcoming spurts of appointments.

Enjoy this thread with a sense of disbelief (do not read with a hot beverage if you are prone to sudden exhalations), wry humor and appreciation for those who have dealt with this creatively.

No doubt we will be adding more to the annals soon.

Sitting almost 12 years out from my initial appointment, I still haven't had a strange response to saying I was in the AF or military. Bummer. lol. I've been getting used to people saying I was in the 'army' since most non-US people refer to the military as the army in a generic term. Took a few times to get used to it.

One of my favorite memories: I was walking near the chapel in uniform and a little old lady turns to her husband and says, "Look, Dear, it's a GIRL one!"
