Your Son/Daughter is Going Where?? Round 2

You were there? Wow. We should have made plans to do lunch or drinks or both.
Did you go to the simulator trailer (at the Southeast end of the elevated parking lot off Gilbert road) and try your skill on the "range" with an M16 or a M240?

I just HAVE to post this again. This is my favorite "so your son/daughter is going where?" video.
It is six pages back, so if you haven't seen it you should!

"Somebody just shoot me." Hilarious. Thanks for sharing. Did I tell you how great my daughter is?....

It’s truly a small world, isn’t it? Really enjoyed meeting so many new 2LTs, especially those who came from NROTC and OCS. Regardless of origin, they’re now all Devil Dogs.

I missed all the demos on Thursday because we landed that night. Bummed that I missed the chance to try the M240, because DD had to haul it during WAR and said it was a brute.

Still got to enjoy other things over the weekend: a tour of Camp Barrett, delicious Italian food and hearty espresso in historic Fredericksburg, fresh poke in gritty Stafford, and wine-tasting at a vineyard just a few miles from the base.

I shook a lot of 2LT hands after the ceremony. I hope one of them was your DS’s. Best to him…and Semper Fi.

I was sitting in the “oh so fun” Appraisal District waiting room today and had a lovely conversation with a Lady. I was wearing my N*ot College USNA T-Shirt. When she realized what it meant she said “oh-my Best Friends Son received a HUGE Football 🏈 Scholarship to USNA!” 🤦🏻‍♀️

I wonder if that one is as big as the women’s soccer scholarships? Then there’s the NARP scholarship…

After posting pictures from SLE, I've been ask a dozen times, no exaggeration, did I join the Army? Was it boot camp? Why did you have your phone in boot camp, etc.?
Classic! No doubt we will get some more fun examples in this cycle.

Now that DS is in his senior year of high school, he gets asked often about what college he's going to after high school. When he says he's hoping to be accepted to the US Naval Academy, he often is given a response like, Why would want to go into the Navy(with your grades and ACT/SAT scores), you could go anywhere?

Try this in response: “Even with my grades and test scores, it’ll be very challenging to get into the Naval Academy. Many candidates have even better stats. Plus I’ll need to pass a fitness test and a medical exam. And then I’ll need a congressional nomination. It’ll be tough. That’s why I have _____ as my backup plan.” 😉

For people who ask questions with a barely concealed barb or a whiff of intentional snark in there, I advocate using the politician’s approach, answering the question you wanted them to ask. Confuse them, thank them, smile, leave them speechless.

“Thank you! I know you understand how massively competitive it is to get into the X Academy, and he/she is excited to go after the opportunity. He’s competing right now for the required nomination from Senators Gasbag and Handgripper, as well as Representative Babykisser, and is doing his multi-event athletic test this weekend, with the medical exam coming up. We have fingers crossed he can get in, though his/her back-up is Shiny School(s), since it will be a full ride with amazing opportunities to travel, and then full employment as a commissioned officer afterwards, maybe headed to flight school or submarine training. I’ll pass on that you were impressed by him/her reaching for USXA and wish them luck.” 😁

I was at a restaurant the other day wearing a USNA polo. Someone asked when I graduated. Ans: I didn't go there. My son just graduated in May, Question: Is he in the Navy now? Ans: Yes. Question :Is he a 2nd LT? Ans. Yes, in the Navy it's called an Ensign. Response: Oh, is he full time? Ans. Yes, 24x7x365....Response: wow!

When CGA cadets are aboard the Eagle they get hats with their last names on them since they are always wearing climbing gear or life vests and cadre need to know who they are. When my DD came home for Christmas that year she gave one of the hats to my dad for his 80th birthday. He wears it a lot just to get asked about his service so he can crow about his GD.

My DS is homeschooled, but takes dual credit courses at a community college. He is trying to talk them into providing a Calculus III and a physics course next semester. He explained that he is applying to West Point, USAFA, and USNA. She was totally confused and asked him why he needs any more calculus and physics if he is just going into the military.
