Your Son/Daughter is Going Where?? Round 2

Freshening this thread, anticipating new additions for Class of 2028!

Be sure to go to Post #1 and check out the original thread too.

this was a great read!

we found that although we had a lot of friends who weren't super familiar with the process (and admittedly we weren't either before DD expressed interest in USNA), most had a basic sense of the prestige, location, need for the nomination (but many thinking you just had to "know" someone), and the service commitment after graduation. There have been several appointees to SAs in recent years from DDs high school, so I think that helped inform our general circle about SAs as well. We have a few SA grads in our larger social circle so that helps. We feel lucky bc everyone has been interested in learning about the process (x2 for us!) and have been beyond supportive of DD regardless of their thoughts on the military, politics, etc.

I saw some dear friends yesterday and as we took a few moments to celebrate the recent news of DD's appointment, one of my friends said, "THIS is the America I want to believe in, one in which DD gets this opportunity!" Felt like such a nice compliment šŸ„°

Nice post mom. Congrats to the daughter and the entire family. I still believe in this great country, a belief supported by my job being locked up daily with other peoples teenagers. Oh, and my grandsons. USA still puts out some amazing kids.

... so most of my conversations regarding USNA occur in dentist, optometrist, and medical clinics. It goes like this, "oh, my son is attending the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA)."
Response # 1. Blank Stare, no clue.
(Ok, fair enough. Then I'll say, "you know, Navy with the Big Boats.")
Response # 2. Oh, you mean West Point?
(I'm visibly annoyed now, "you know, Annapolis, U.S. Naval Academy, not West Point, that's USMA")

Here's the thing, the dentist, optometrist, and medical clinics are in the military base.

Every now and then the doc is a USMA grad and the conversations quickly turned to Army Navy game.

I've told people that I've been appointed and will be attending USNA at Annapolis.

#1 reply:

Indiana? Really?

#2:

Why not attend West Point?
Look them in the eye, stand tall with legs slightly spread as if you were keeping your balance on a heaving deck, and in your best pirate voice, declaim:

How long have you been in the Navy?
All me bloomin' life, sir!
Me mother was a mermaid, me father was King Neptune.
I was born on the crest of a wave and rocked in the cradle of the deep. Seaweed and barnacles are me clothes.
Every tooth in me head is a marlinspike; the hair on me head is hemp. Every bone in me body is a spar, and when I spits, I spits tar!

I'se hard, I is, I am, I are!

THE classic response!!

Them: where does your son go to school?
Me: USMA
Them: Dang is that a military school? Were they really hard to handle at home?

Yowzers.

This is where you deadpan it, mention the Presidents, Rhodes Scholars and that problem child Coach K. - all were completely turned around by the daily corporal punishment there.

I think the strategic addition of ā€œWest Pointā€ helps most people with the light bulb turning on.

Or...you could do like I do now...just adjust for your DS/DD....

My answer to "Oh, you were in the military? Uh, well...did you go to college?"

<<Bow head a touch, look down, slightly mumble>>

"Uh, well...I didn't go to college on campus, but I was in a federal institution and after four years I earned a bachelors degree! It changed my life!"

And then reach for the popcorn and soda...

***Oh, side note...I did learn that this is NOT the best touch of humor with a new students parents on parent-teacher night...

Conversation at my youngest sonā€™s baseball game yesterday:

Where did your oldest son end up?
ā€”Heā€™s at West Point
Oh, nice! Thatā€™sā€¦Annapolis?
ā€”No, New York
(Confused look) Oh, so whatā€™s in Annapolis?
ā€”the Naval Academy
(Scrunched up face)
ā€”Same idea, but Navy instead of Army. Boats and planesā€¦
(Still contemplating)
ā€”Top Gun
Oh! Thatā€™s so cool! But, waitā€¦thatā€™s not where he is?
