branch details
In my son's case (and that of his fellow cadet classmates who branch-detailed) the detail was by choice (son's top choice); son wanted MI, but also wanted the "excitement" of a combat branch, and liked what he learned from the people he talked to in armor, so he feels he's got the best of both worlds.
It may also be true that the chances of getting MI are improved with a branch detail, since it is one of the more competitive branches. But then, so are the combat branches which are often the branch details.
In the end, I think each cadet chooses the path that suits them best. Now that the rubber is really about to hit the road - here's wishing all the best of luck and success in your new assignments

I don't think Branch details aren't by OML. I think its by volunteers, then random. I could be wrong though.
