What to expect at the AFA.

...ski almost every weekend at world class ski resorts where the cost of the entire season of skiing for me was most likely less than one weekend for most travellers...

Will you elaborate on this aspect a little bit? What are the discounts?? I own skis. Would I be able (as a 4/C) to have them at the Academy?

Yea would someone please give a post about anything that 4c's are allowed to have after basics...I know its very limited. And also can anyone speak about 3c 2c 1c years?

Civilian glasses, photos to put up depending on the squadron. A camera...

A separate monitor after parent's weekend... again depending on the squadron.

As a freshman, not likely will you be able to put stuff up. As an upperclassman, you might have a chance, just requires permission. I have an artist type guy in my squad with lots of his artwork on his walls.

Nice.
Did your guy make any work while at the academy, or were they brought from home?
I know that if you major in humanities you get to work with the department of English and Fine Arts, but does anyone else get access to this?

Go get a lobotomy. I didn't take any of your posts as bad and read them in their proper context. The other cadets on here laughed and understood as well. Get over yourself and learn to control your anger and frustration. If its that hard for you to control your ability to TYPE when you have to think, I fear for you when you can't control your mouth when a cadre yells at you. check your attitude real quick before you prove LITS premonitions correct.

Thanks.
You're right.
I guess I never thought of it that way.

You can have them. My skis were a Christmas present when I was a 4 dig. Kept them and my skiing gear (to include civvies, only exception to the civvies rule is skiing!) in my room and skiied almost every weekend. the Liberty Pass is about $200 for unlimited skiing at Keystone and A-Basin (cheaper 2 years ago). The new Patriot Pass is $200 for unlimited skiing at Winter Park and Copper Mountain. The Patriot Pass Plus for $220 (the one i will get this year) includes 6 days at Steamboat Springs. The ski club (I did for the first two years, won't need it now with my car) was $50 a year for unlimited buses to the resorts. The bus would go to a different place each weekend, usually Keystone, Breck, or Vail. Sometimes Beaver creek and copper mountain. Four digs could wear civvies while on the trips. The club offered free passes for two weekends a month that people can use to ski (so they don't have to use those limited 5 passes as a freshman!). Therefore, to ski all season you could theoretically only pay $250 which would probably get you a good 8-12 weekends skiing. Factor in food if you buy it instead of bringing it or any additional passes to other resorts (usually $40-50 a day at most). Or if you borrow/rent a car, those fees and gas. Lots of options! I know my buds and i will convoy up in 2-3 cars this season, get a large cabin for 10 people or so with kitchen and living rooms for probably less than $20 a person per night!. Good deals.

Also, rentals from outdoor rec at the academy runs about $100 for skis, boots, and poles for the season, and $120 for snowboards+boots. Very cheap!

Feel free to ask more if you'd like. Since I hate helmets and my mother fears for my life just wearing a beanie, I have a ripcap beanie that offers almost as much protection as a helmet but is like a beanie when you wear it. Search ribcap on google or amazon to find out more.

He made them all while at the academy (he's a firstie right now) including a large oil piece that's about 7 feet by 3 feet. He is a humanities major. ;) I believe there is an art club where you could do this type of stuff too.

Ah cool (although I don't remember seeing an art club in the booklet), this is one reason why I struggled with what my major would be. If I get in, I'm definitely joining that club.

Speaking of clubs, I'm guessing that 4* can't join clubs? And when is there time for clubs? And are there any clubs you (or anyone) recommend?

No, we can join clubs. There is a club day short after transition week.

I recommend doing something that you enjoy hehe.

I'd recommend the ski club to help you get away when you need to! Other good clubs I've heard about are the paintball club, martial arts clubs (judo TKD-traditional, TKD-olympic, Aikido, etc.), and for upperclassmen, my favorites, the swing and blues dance clubs. :)

Thanks for the info hornetguy. At the risk of sounding presumptuous, I think I may purchase myself a new pair if I do get in. My current K2s are three seasons old and about 15 cm shorter than I want.

How far is it to Keystone from the Academy? Also, is there a pass good for the all of the Vail resorts (including Keystone, Breck, BC, might be missing one or two)? Or did you find that the Liberty Pass is sufficient and if need be, buy a lift ticket to the other resorts?

Swing club was mentioned in the Falcon Love Song. I was wondering about that... Only for upperclassmen? That's a bit disappointing. I took some swing lessons with a friend this past summer and had quite a bit of fun. I was thinking it would be fun to improve upon those skills.

Ah, Keystone! I'm a fan of Steamboat too.

My Colorado ski time has been almost exclusively at Keystone. Love the place. Never been out to Steamboat. Now though, my brother is at the U of Utah, so I've been skiing there the last two years.

are there good nordic trails? I'm not that into tying weights to my feet and falling down a mountain  jk. I'm not the best downhill skier, but I want to make the team for nordic, since I think I read I can count nordic skiing as an intramural if I'm competitive.

Are there any cadets in nordic skiing that want to tell me about it?

They call it Cross Country Skiing in Colorado, and YES some of the best. All though I always prefered going downhill in about 12" of virgin powder myself.

"Cross Country Skiing"? That just makes me think of cross country running. Ah, well, I suppose I'll get used to it, along with other language shifts. I hear you call budging "cutting" in colorado, too. :yllol: At least I won't be the only one with a weird accent. Minnesotan accents sound closer to those in Colorado than some southern accents I've heard.

Colorado has an accent? I've never noticed it

And what exactly is "budging" Curiosity has captured me...

I think Nordic means Shredding the moguls, They have real moguls in Co...Vertical decents that will scare the snot out of you.
