Well guys, CC just called me in to give me the news. Direct appointment, but still undecided on whether I'll accept. Hopefully you all get word soon too!

Congratulations! I third the stats request!

I started off pretty confident reading that, then you turned out to have a really good high school career and a lot of leadership and other things the academy really looks for.

I can see why you're hesitant to accept the appointment, you're really close to just finishing your degree and pursuing a civilian career.

Absolutely. It's a tough decision and I have a lot to consider, but at least all the doors open to me lead down good paths🤷‍♂️.

Those are fantastic stats! It is rare for a prior-e to receive a direct appointment so you should be proud :) Hopefully, this is a sign that they are in the process of reviewing the LEAD applications.
Thanks man, I appreciate it.

Just for everyone's SA: my CC was actually notified last week, but hadn't been in until yesterday. This seems to coincide with what Astroneerbro's adviser had said about the board review of LEAD applicants. As another note, I finished my application stupid early, so that may have resulted in my receiving a decision this soon.

I was appointed and am a 1N0 as well! I completed my application kind of late (end of December) and was appointed last week.
Wish everyone the best and Go Falcons!

Congratulations, that's great news! Does anyone know if the Preppies find out after the Direct Entries? Or does everyone find out at the same time?

@colucci I think you should accept. If it's not for you, I imagine you can go back to your prior assignment. With your prior experience, all of the Academy in summer will be a no-brainer for you. You'll be busy in the beginning helping out all of the other doolies with basic military stuff, I assume. Also I think the priors stick together somewhat so there's a built-in support group. The academics are a learning curve for most, if not all except for the few brainiacs, so everybody is in the same boat, er, I mean aircraft-lol.
From what my DD said, the squadron pulls together (she had good squads) the girls looked out for each other, the guys looked out for the girls, (in a big brother way). The AF needs officers w/prior enlisted experience.
Congrats & all the best of luck in whichever decision!

Do you think you could show us your stats?

Yeah of course! I am not as polished on paper as Colucci haha.

School
  • GPA: 3.34
  • Class Rank 195 Class size 391
  • Best SAT: reading 630 Math: 610
  • Graduated with AA when I graduated high school in Integrated Studies
  • 130 College credits, College GPA 3.5
  • NHS
  • Theta Kappa (community college honors program)
I did running start so I took full time college courses starting my jr year for high school. Also worked as much as I could which lead to me prioritizing work over school. My classes focused on STEM; I was unsure of my degree when I went for this AA that's also why it's so broad! But I finished up to CALC 3, and took two years of Chemistry as electives.

CFA
  • BB Throw: 60
  • pull ups: 1
  • shuttle run: 8 something
  • sit ups: 88
  • push ups: 60
  • Mile: 7:33
Leadership/ Volunteer
  • PTL
  • Help out with the local kids in preparing for this run called bloomsday
Military
  • AFSC: 1N051
  • Enlisted SEP 2017
  • 2 TDYs
  • Guard, also full-time
  • E-3; I enlisted in SEP but they couldn't get me a basic spot until JUL! So July 2020 is when I would be promoting
Random
  • Went to the civilian prep school NWP straight after high school
  • Set national record in 1500m for speedskating
  • 16th during World Team trials for speedskating
  • Submitted all the rec letters I could, all were from officers, two of which graduating from service academies
I really do think that the interview with my ALO helped too; he seemed to get me and see that there's potential. I had a whole plan to move to Virginia and seek out a civilian intel job over there if I wasn't accepted. I have a friend from tech school and she was going to let me stay with her. I was fully planning on transferring guard bases and everything. But I really couldn't turn down something I had been wanting for years. I know I am not the perfect candidate and on paper. I look super average but I work hard and accomplish whatever I set my mind to.

So don't stress if you aren't like the perfect candidate; if you truly want it you will get it.

There's some really good qualifications in there. Its obvious you've been working for this for a long time

Congrats! Glad to see 1N0 Guard Bums representing here lol. In all seriousness, you earned that appointment; like Astroneerbro said, it's clear that you put a significant effort into earning an appointment. Also you must've gotten to beautiful San Angelo right around the time I was leaving.

@Wishful I'm certainly considering it. I understand the need for prior service officers, but I'm in a similar situation to @bigblue24. I already reside in the MD/DC/VA area and want to pursue Intel as a career. On the other hand, I discovered a passion for not only intel, but for flying through the guard. Our squadron's next UPT board is in June, and I will wrap up my degree in May. I would regret giving up intel for flying, or vice versa, so I'm hoping by that route I may have my cake and eat it too. Either way, I know I have a lot to consider.

@colucci
I want to add something else to consider:
My DD graduated SUPT & is currently in a schoolhouse. We were talking about a AFA cadet we know who wants to be an astronaut. As you know, there's several career paths that can get you there, flying fighters is one & that's the path they want to take. It carries risks though. For ex: what if you don't have a lot of fighters in your drop? What if you just can't fly?? There are very smart people who just can't fly as well as people who get in the cockpit with hands that are as good as an experienced pilot; they're amazing! For this particular cadet getting to astronaut via a path o/t fighters takes advantage of their skills (really smart) that don't depend on the roll-of-the- dice scenarios.
What if you get RPA's, or become a Missileer? In my short time on this forum I've seen both assignments take cadets that didn't want to go there....needs of big AF & all.
If you went to the AFA & didn't/couldn't get pilot, would you be (not happy but OK) with another assignment?
Just a thought-Good Luck!!

This is something that weighs into my indecisiveness. This also applies to my other route, as by applying to a Guard/Reserve unit, I’ll know what airframe I’m assigned before stepping foot on Maxwell. Despite this, I understand that by attending USAFA I will open a world of opportunities unbeknownst to me.

Still quite a difficult decision. Also, I saw in a thread several months ago about priors finishing out their contracts at USAFA. Would you happen to know id this policy is in effect?

I don't but I assume someone on this forum does.

About priors finishing out their enlisted contract? They usually do and get a DD214 to go along with that. The time spent finishing up your contract at the Academy does not count as service time towards retirement nor does it count as time served toward receiving GI Bill benefits.
