I just had my interview this afternoon. I feel it went really well and I made the board laugh quite a bit, but it was 20-25 minutes long. I know this is longer than the average nomination interview; is this a good sign?
It depends on how much other candidates made them laugh and if that was a graded part of the interview, and you would actually have to know the lengths/numbers of the thousands of interviews to arrive at an average. But to respond seriously, there is no way to know. The people on these panels volunteer their time for what they regard as a serious purpose, but there is enjoyment to be had in talking to young people aspiring to service as a military officer. If they had the time to spare, they are happy to engage. If your Spidey-sense didn’t pick up on body language indicating annoyance, impatience, amusement of the kind that indicates you were funny for the wrong reasons, you are probably fine.

That's some good news, thank you!!!

DD had her interview today. She said it was awesome and really liked the panel. It only took 15 minutes - she was a little surprised by that! But the panel was great and she appreciated the time they took to speak to her
DS had his yesterday as well; it was 15 minutes exactly. I guess it went well -- hard to know what they're looking for. He did say they mentioned that Wagner's district was extremely competitive, so at least our kids got to the interview stage!

Good morning - I had my interview for Naval Academy with Senator Feinstein's Committee this morning. I have been trying to find information about how many applications she received and how many interviews typically are granted. Does anybody have any information? I know there is no way to know how competitive I am relative to the other interviewees but I am just trying to figure out the basic percentages. Thank you
Congrats on getting an interview! I was orignially scheduled for an interview but they emailed me saying “due to scheduling conflicts... we will be unable to accommodate any interviews this year”. I don’t have any basic information but it seems as if even getting an interview is a good sign. Good luck!

Does anyone who interviewed for Senator Michael Bennet (CO) receive a follow up or any further information?

Bennet's interviews were still going on into December. My son did his on 12/5. The last round of interviews was just done yesterday, 12/6. My son was told that they would let folks know results at the end of December/beginning of January.

Alright thank you, tell your son good luck!

Anyone heard anything from the Colorado Senators? My son interviewed with them in October and will interview with our representative on December 5th?
Gardner sent out letters with decisions at the end of November. I believe this was the last weekend Bennett was conducting interviews, so probably won't hear about decisions until the end of this month or early January.

If one has an LOA for an academy and does not receive a senatorial, nor a congressional representative nomination, will the academy give a VP nom?

If the candidate has an LOA and fulfills any conditions specified in that LOA with the exception of a nom, is fully qualified, but does not obtain a nom from elected officials or is not eligible for service connected, I believe that applicant is then under strong consideration for one of the categories of noms under the SA’s control, including the VP. There are no guarantees. Every year, there are applicants with LOAs who are not offered appointments, of whom some will not have obtained a nom. There is no way of knowing any “stat” associated with this situation. This is one of the reasons alternate plans are always encouraged.

anyone happen to be from Rhode Island who has heard anything from senators/congressmen?

Good evening all,

I just finished the interviews for the Maryland Senators and my Representative for a USNA nomination and was informed that a decision would be made regarding a nomination by...

Representative Raskin: January 1st (goal date for his office)
Senator Van Hollen: Mid/ Early January
Senator Cardin: Early February

Thought this could be useful information for anyone in Maryland.

I also wanted to check if there was anything I should be doing in the meantime while I wait to hear back?

I have completed my USNA application except for DoDMERB and the Nomination, and I am just waiting to hear back from DoDMERB. I have also completed an NROTC application. I figure this is pretty much a sit back and wait period of time but after working to get everything completed for so long it feels weird not to have anything to do regarding the applications.

Nice of you to share accurate intel on MD elected officials.

You’re all set with plain college application(s) in case you do not get a USNA offer of appointment this year, or NROTC scholarship? Do you have your alternate school list researched and identified, know their application close dates in case you do not get into schools on your NROTC list and need to get a scholarship reassigned? Identified the school with NROTC you would attend as a college programmer if no national scholarship? You can be the strongest candidate around, but it never hurts to exercise contingency planning skills.

Finish HS strong. Enjoy family and friends. PT (run, run, run) and keep your fitness levels up. Ask your parents what projects they would like you to take on in your possible 7-8 months as a full-time resident.

Thanks! I received the information directly from the congressmen's staffers so it is as accurate as it is going to get.

I finished all of my applications in October for plain colleges although all of them have NROTC units so even if I do not get a scholarship (or appointment to USNA) I will be able to compete for one.

My target school for an NROTC scholarship is the University of Michigan for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. My other schools of interest are Purdue, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Maryland. Stat wise Purdue and U of W are pretty safe schools and Maryland is also pretty safe due to my in-state advantage. If I get deferred from one of those schools I have a couple of other applications- Maine Maritime is my top choice among those- I can put in the RD pool to ensure I get accepted somewhere.

My coach certainly agrees with you on the run, run, run POV. I row so we have just started our winter training season and since we cannot practice at school (COVID) and have to social distance and wear masks when we practice together, running is his new favorite activity :)

Thank you for your insight on this matter and for merging my post with this thread- I was not quite sure if it belonged here so I appreciate your assistance.

An update for California applicants: Just got a call from Harris's office stating I have been selected for an interview for a nomination to USAFA! They stated the interview would be this Saturday. The call came from a (415) area code so be on the lookout for a call sometime this week.
