Will Top Gun 2 affect USNA admissions?

Poor OP. Opened the Pandora’s chest and launched the aviation crowd into critical shade analyses and commentary.

You know everyone in past or current uniform here has had those moments where we said silently to ourselves, “And they pay me to do this.”
On my initial solo in the T-37....as the gear came up, I clearly remember laughing into my oxygen mask and saying "and they're gonna pay me to do this for a career!!"

And "they" did, too!

There are few things that scare me in life. Aging, taxes, and the T-37 cockpit.

I flew a B1a's out of Huntsville; 650 mph 200ft off the deck!..................................... at Boeing's Huntsville Simulator/Training Division. They had E6 deliverables to check up on. Never did manage to land that B1. Open up throttles, top 650 mph at 200ft; controls would get heavy, and that thing would enter a death roll every time. Nice explosion though, flaming tumble and all.

Forgive the OT post but, As U R having fun; without googling: can you ID this bit of NavAir Genius (below).

They have one of three remaining on display at the SD air museum (gawd I love that town). I went kinda nuts when I saw it---had DD laughing.

Seen here taxiing to "runway"

Note: I am getting up there in age, but I would gladly run buoys at 32mph, 28ft off, on any water where this thing could land.

Just in case there are USAF types feeling superior. ID this one:------ The Cold War made for such awesome 'Aviation Weeks'

Production version was to have 4 turbojets swiveling 90 degrees to support vertical takeoff/landing

I don't know if this demonstrator survives, but it wouldn't surprise me to learn that some State DOT is using it in Highway resurfacing to burn off old asphalt.

Sorry; its slow day here---- I will stop now. I was gonna post pics of the UCLA women volleyball team but thought better of it.

No, how is your pose?🤣 There goes my gravitas today.

🤣🤣🤣Well… not quite like that. The only “sliders” I knew and consumed where on the boat. To add to the great shade stories from other posters, I wore the gold rim AO’s while wearing a bag or in uniform. I later took to wearing Ray Ban Wayfarers when flying, clear visor down of course. I bought them at Keesler AFB on an in and out training hop. Now sometimes I wear both types when shopping. DW says I look silly wearing them indoors. I wear them because they all have prescription lenses (near sighted)!

I was a US Marine on the Ranger just after Top Gun came out. Top Gun 2 WILL absolutely see a boom in military aviation. Obviously, the Navy and Marines will see a bump in carrier aviation. I do NOT attribute this to a stronger will to serve but to a proliferation of video games and false expectations of Navy and Marine Corps carrier aviation. I actually expect to see more DOR's out of NROTC and OCS in the coming years due to Top Gun 2 "Dreamers". Just my 2 cents.

NEW Top Gun 2 trailer:

Yes, we know there will be “Hollywood mistakes,” but still…😁
:tomcat:
Lots of goosebumps watching that!! Wonder if it will also be an IMAX release?

I’ve not seen a movie come out yet that I’m looking forward to seeing on the big screen. This is the one!!

Our parent club hosted the All-Academy Ball this year. Held in a large hangar and all Top Gun Themed. It was spectacular and the logo was displayed on the wall, the trailers played on big screens and the soundtrack played. Complete with a Navy trainer plane rolled up to the entrance.

The photographer took pictures of all cadets and MIDN in front of the plane if they wanted. I had to giggle since the West Point Cadets were taking family photos in front of a plane with NAVY emblazoned on the tail.

Definitely my favorite “off the rails” thread so far but the following is more or less a time stamp for me to reflect back on a couple years from now.

Soon to be a plebe no more, DD entered with an aim for Dental Corps. Post advisor meeting and snagging San Diego PROTRAMID, is aiming much, much higher than Dental Corps….and still hasn’t seen more than 15 minutes of the original TG

Movies I can’t stop quoting, even in the most professional settings…

- Tombstone
- National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
- The Princess Bride
- A Christmas Story
- Top Gun

We have similar tastes. I regularly quote from “The Princess Bride,” “A Christmas Story” and “Top Gun.” Round out my top five with “When Harry Met Sally” and “Witness.”
