Coach Ken is not coming back for 2023.

I just think the number one quality of the new coach should be appreciating what the SAs produce and how hard the athletes and students work. And what they have signed up to do after the game and classes are over.

Just read an https://theathletic.com/3991194/2022/12/11/navy-coach-ken-niumatalolo-out/?amp=1
discussing Kennesaw state coach, an Air Force coach, and an Army coach are some who would be a good fit for the triple option if they keep going in that direction.

Also, talk about a high compliment. Put a lump in my throat.

Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule said he felt compelled to express his admiration and respect for Niumatalolo.

“Today is a sad day for college football,” Rhule wrote on Twitter. “I loved competing against you Coach – but above all else you are the one man I would want my kids to play for above all others.”

I would like to see every candidates plan to take USNA to the National Championship.

NEVER gonna happen.

No SA will ever get there; wrong schools, wrong schedules, etc.
As much as I would like it to be an interview question, I recognize that SAs hands are tied here. Too many things Div. 1 teams have we can’t.
Medical requirements
Transfer portals
The opportunity to make money on their name
No commitment to service post degree
No DOD rules
Freedoms that go with regular college

The list goes on. We just cannot compete at that level.

But didn’t he resign for his lack of a winning record?
His tenure at Stanford was actually similar in trajectory to Coach Ken’s — at an equally hard school for recruiting, in a more challenging conference.

Three PAC-12 titles, two Rose Bowl wins, five PAC-12 South titles. Named PAC-12 coach of the year four times, and national coach of the year. The program fell on hard times the past few years. Yet he remains one of the most respected and admired coaches at any level.

I liked Coach N. . He has done some great things, and I think he truly gets the purpose of a Service Academy. I also agree that every Coach has a shelf life, and Coach Ken is probably 2-3 years past his. This wasn't about one game -- he has been pretty ineffective for 2-3 years. I kinda gave up my support the first game of 2020, when Navy got thrashed and he made a bunch of public excuses.

He will be hard to replace, and perhaps its time to realign expectations -- USNA is not going to be a TOP 10, or even Top 20 football school. Based on size of school, we really should be a Division III team , but I know that will never happen for a lot of reasons.

I read that there were issues with retention of 2023 on the team. What happened there?

It seems to me that the height of winning seasons under Coach Ken was when they played as an independent. Navy, back then could schedule a 4-4-3 season - 4 winnable games, 4 possibly winnable and 3 probably not winnable. Many teams sheduled rarely had seen the triple option. Later, when Navy went into the AAC, everyone figured out the triple option. I say consider leaving the AAC and go back to being an independent like Notre Dame and Army.

After the OC fiasco last year, this is not a surprise. I am more surprised he was not let go last year. Passing on the BYU gig was a signal that he was done after Navy and if this is the case, he leaves having done amazing things in a difficult coaching environment. Having delivered 11 wins in 15 seasons against Army should make anyone legend status, but we live in a "what have you done for me lately" sports environment. Navy will hire a great coach to replace him, but will they go for a flashy name who intends to use them on their personal journey to bigger programs (ala Paul Johnson), or will their heart be in it to stick it out to build leaders rather than their own personal brand?
