2 Week Fleet Standard ROM

My wife and I had COVID right at the start - last March and rode it out at home in a week or so. Yes, we were extremely lucky and although we both are firm believers (along with several of my doctors) that this brings a degree of immunity, we still took the recommended precautions with masks, etc and we're in the NYC area where much was (and still is) closed. Thankfully, I have now had both Shots and my wife gets the first later this week. Its been noted in the media that the 2nd shot often brings a rough day or so of side effects - due to the antibodies from the first shot. I had that Rough Ride after my first shot and when I went for the 2nd, the staff said it was not unusual for people who had already had COVID and thus already had antibodies. Needless to say, I had a rough day and a half or so after the subsequent shot but its now past and opening in my wake.

Yesterday was a down day for Plebe daughter ... being confined to their rooms adds a lot to the usual emotional stress that these kids have to endure.

Her allotted time to go outside yesterday on her run helped a lot. She called me after that and said how she saw many of her classmates that looked really depressed ... their body language, and their expressions .... I suggested, those moments when you see someone that appears to be down, well, that is a great opportunity to say “Hello”. All of us don’t do enough of just saying the word “Hello .... Hi”. It’s a Very powerful word.

Even when I am talking to some support person over the phone, maybe insurance or investment, whatever, it doesn’t matter, ... I always open the conversation by saying ... “Hi, how are you doing today?”

John Prine’s “Hello in There” seems like an appropriate timeless message

Talked to my plebe son yesterday and he was the same. I told my husband he wasn't overly frustrated or angry - more resigned and "flat" and that absence of emotion actually concerned me more than previous venting sessions. He texted this morning and promised to take his full two hours today to sit outside and go for a run. This is a hard time for them and I agree - they need to look our for and prop each other up.

Is that worth the risk that there could be unforeseen long term effects that we don’t know about now? Like sterilization?

Yes. The people who are spreading that story are the same ones who say bat-sh*t crazy stuff like "Bill Gates is putting tracking devices in vaccine." They are the same people who continued to believe that MMR vaccine causes autism even after The Lancet retracted the article, exposed the abundant flaws and outright fabrications, and the author was stripped of his medical license in the UK. Believe whatever you want. But have the integrity to back up that decision with a personal commitment to stay home and treat yourself if you get COVID.

Ask India and Africa about Gates.

As far as your comment about my integrity ... although I owe you no such promise and find this comment offensive .. I will not go to the doctor or hospital if I get Covid. Unless they bring me there in a body bag.

Its almost as if people who don’t believe a certain narrative should be cancelled. I’m sorry we have different beliefs about this.

Its funny, but mine is the complete opposite. Absolutely loves ROM. Finally feels recharged after getting adequate sleep and studying as much as he would like.

Gotta say -- there were times when I was a Plebe that I would have loved a couple weeks of isolation instead of waiting for the next Upperclass to barge into the room and ask rates. Can Upperclass make Plebes do a Zoom comearound ?

hopefully the 10pm screaming is helping - wonder if the mids at the Hilton can hear it
Gotta love those midnight screams during Finals Week !

We are still doing come-arounds virtually. But I think come-around means something very different today from what it did in previous generations. I just check in with my Plebes, ensure they’re doing well, and briefly go over this week’s professional knowledge chapter. Have heard stories from decades ago involving a lot of PT and yelling. That happens very rarely today.

I've been encouraging my 3C MIDN to find someone to help support by encouraging and talking. Perhaps that would help both! I hate to hear of DORs.

Yesterday DS shared an email he received from another mid from one of his classes. Very nice positive comments and appreciation for his class contributions with a tough instructor. He said it made his week. Very unexpected.

Little things make a difference. I suggested he consider someone he respects, someone who has impressed or made an impact and pay it forward with an unsolicited email.

Last night, and the night before he had fireside chats. A Seal who is one of his instructors set them up each night of ROM. Each night has had an impressive guest. Jocko finishes each night. Last night was Marcus Luttrell. I can’t wait to hear tonight’s fireside chat details.

Little things make a difference. He is constantly impressed with the exposure they have to leaders and experiences from the fleet.
Also, chick-fil-a lunch was appreciated as were the candy bars at dinner.

2024 got to see their Crest and motto. Son and roomies seem to like it very much.

“In adversity, triumph”

hang in there mids

Little things matter during ROM.

DD too enjoyed the fireside chats with Jocko and Luttrell.

Chick-fil-A is always welcome.

So was the three hours of outdoor PT that DD nabbed the other day — one hour over the limit. She said the sun felt too good to go inside after just two hours.

And class rings! They’ve started arriving for 2022. DD is over the moon about hers, even though the stone hasn’t been placed yet. She’s hoping the Ring Dance is somehow preserved, even if it’s a watered-down pandemic version.

it’s been a tough Dark Ages. They’ll come out the other side stronger and better. And that’s all we can ask.

My 3C DS liked Joco. He said it went very late...till 0100-I believe. He and his 2 room mates are doing well during this ROM. DS remaining very positive. I like the idea about sending an e mail about positive aspects (thanks Heatherg21). An O4 grad from a few years back was a Mid of his DS sponsors. This Grad reached out to DS the other day to talk about different Navy communities. This O4 is a RL Intel type and likes it. DS interest ranges from EOD, NSW, Flight, USMC...O4 suggested DS talk to more officers to get a feel for the different types of personalities typical to those communities. The Sponsors...have years of grads they took care of. Sponsors are Great!
