AFROTC Scholarship 2018 - Results - January

DD received a Type 7, 4 year, convertible to a type 2, 3 year (Technical Major). Evidently they prefer in state enrollment. DD has been accepted to VMI, the Citadel and Norwich. At this stage it appears as if Norwich is the most affordable option. We are CA residents and DD does not wish to attend school in CA. Any readers been down this path? Thanks in advance...

Check with the schools to see if they will formally offer instate tuition rates for your OOS student. Many schools are familiar with Type 7 scholarships. We are in the same boat as our DD will most likely be OOS for his top choices and he was just awarded a type 7 scholarship. One of his choices Univ of Minnesota offers in state for Type 7s.
"OOS" ? Thanks for the reply! We will be contacting the three schools tomorrow. Just on pins and needles tonight as we found out and cannot contact the schools until tomorrow. Very much appreciated.

In terms of making your application look better, the only thing I had in mind (if I was re-boarded), was to try and get higher ACT/SAT scores (assuming they accept new ones after you've been declared eligible)...but if you have high scores already, it probably wouldn't make much difference. There's not really anything else you can re-do. Hope you get selected in March!

Thanks for the advice. I am very happy with my test scores, so I don't think I will be retaking the tests. Let's hope for the best in March.

Yeah, best of luck to you!

Does anyone know if you can use a Type 7 at a private school, if the tuition is cheaper than my local public school?

Yes, the Type 7 can be converted into a 3-year Type 2 scholarship, which means it pays for tuition and "some fees" up to $18k for three years. The last year is on you if it's a 4-year school.

Unless something has changed that is incorrect. rothnroll said the private was LESS than the state. IF that is the case than they DO NOT have to convert to a 3 yr type 2. It is only if the OOS or private charges more than the IS that you cannot use the 4 yr type 7

Was ReBoarded! Sadly...here is a portion of the letter

We appreciated the opportunity to consider your application for an Air Force ROTC scholarship. Although your application was competitive, you were not selected for a scholarship at this time. We will continue to evaluate your application on our scholarship selection board which will convene 5-8 March. You will be notified of the board results about 2 weeks afterwards.

Is there a difference between being Reboarded in March and Rebounded in April?

I was told Type 7 was for a public school. If you want to go to any private school you need to convert it, regardless of the cost.

Who told you that? Just curious, since my understanding was the same as Pima's.

I called 866/423-7682 x1 and asked. That is what I was told by the technician.

Per the AFROTC website:
"Type 7—Pays college tuition up to the equivalent of a public school’s in-state rate and a book allowance. If a student receives a Type 7 offer but wishes to attend a college/university where they do not qualify under the guidelines, the student can convert the four-year Type 7 scholarship to a three-year Type 2 scholarship. You cannot activate a Type 7 scholarship at a nonqualifying school and pay the difference."

Also, the three year scholarship starts sophomore year, so freshman year is on you.

Ahh! Received 4 year to Princeton, Harvard and Columbia!!!!
Congrats! Does that mean you were accepted at those schools? Or that you got the ROTC scholarship? Nice choices by the way.

Thank you! Still completely in disbelief. It just means that I was offered placement into the Army ROTC unit's of those schools (Getting full scholarship). I am still awaiting acceptance to the university itself.
Hopefully it increases my chances of getting in!

Probably worth calling the Admissions Office directly at each of those schools, plus sending emails to them, informing them that you have received the scholarship.

They claim they're "need-blind" but in fact they need to make sure that at least 38% (Princeton) and as much as 50% (Columbia) of their entering class is paying full-freight.

They have to "optimize for revenue", as their consultants put it. So anyone who
a) meets their academic standards (you should present scores/GPA at their admitted students' 25th percentile or above)
AND
b) can also pay full-freight
... is going to be preferred over applicants who need financial aid.

Congrats.

However this thread is AF not ARMY ROTC. I just don't want posters to get confused. AFROTC is tied to the cadet, not the school. AROTC is tied to the school AND the cadet.

Oh wow! You're right! Misread it! Thanks for clarifying!
