Hey guys first time poster, long time lurker here. I’m finished with my USMA application, officially medically qualified, and have been in contact with a coach at USMA. He said he would rate me as a recruited athlete on my application, however I’m not sure if that means I get what most people would call a “blue chip”. I’m also taking an official visit very very soon (won’t give exact date), and when we were talking he stated multiple times he could get me a LOA.

I have also received a very long email from USMA stating: “Welcome to the start of a great journey. If you are receiving this email the Office of the Directorate of Intercollegiate Athletics sees you as a potential student-athlete. Congratulations on starting your application process for the United States Military Academy. This application process has a number of steps, but with hard work from you as a candidate, you will complete it without any issues.” And it also states that my admissions officer is MAJ Olatunde.

I would ask the coach this question but he’s a busy guy and I’m trying to take a little initiative instead of annoying him.

GO ARMY!

BLUF- yes. From the information you’ve given you are a recruited athlete. That is not the same thing as a blue chip however. There are always dynamics at play that can vary by sport. A good rule of thumb though - if you are having phone conversations on a regular basis w a recruiting or head coach at a D1 school you are high on their list. If you get occasional calls or texts and informational emails you are on their board, but they may not use their limited slots w admissions on you.

Who made the first call you or the coach?

I have been thru this several times with friends, family, and players.

A typical recruit for a SA gets a call from a coach expressing great interest in them attending their SA.

That coach is trying to out recruit other SAs, Big 10, SEC, or the IVYs etc for the services of the player. They will make a serious recruiting pitch, and they will make some assurances that your “issues” whatever they might be will not be an hindrance as for admittance.

if you say yes you then inform other coaches and say no.

If on the other hand you have called the coach and they have said , I will put a check next to your name , I’d see that person more as a walk on with some wind at their back as far as admissions.

The coach having called and asked a recruit to attend their SA puts a lot of pressure on the coach to deliver.

And they will pull out the stops to deliver, They will have folks dealing directly with admissions or medical to see that person admitted.

Another good thing about that check by your name , high recruit or someone with a check, that could well open the door for prep school if you are not a direct admit.
