Hello everyone, I’m extremely considering the Air Force ROTC program and I’m wondering if any of you could give me a little insight to see if I’m even worth considering for a Air Force ROTC scholarship. Below I’ve listed my achievements and anything I deemed fitting to list:
ECs:

  • 4.26 GPA weighted, a 3.9 unweighted
  • Honors, AP, and Colleges courses
  • ACT Score: 23 (plan to retake the ACT)
  • No SAT score yet
  • Eagle Scout
  • Boy Scout troop roles- Senior Patrol Leader, Chaplains Aid, Patrol Leader, OA Representative
  • HOBY Leadership award winning finalist
  • Varsity Football, Baseball, Wresting, and Tennis
  • Beta Club
  • Student Council Officer
  • United Champions Ambassador
  • Pep Club advisor
  • Key Club Officer
Jobs:

  • Camp Raven Knob Boy Scout Reservation Counselor- 2 years
  • Food Lion cashier- 1 year

That’s my plan, but besides that do you think I’m doing well enough to be considered?
In my *unofficial* opinion, I think you have good leadership and athletics.

But, I don’t believe you meet the minimum ACT to be considered for AFROTC right now with a23, hence my previous comment.

Good luck!

Thank you! I plan to take the actual ACT the moment I get the chance, with studying as much as I can, but thankfully that was just the pre ACT. But do you happen to know what the minimum is?

Sounds good I’ve seen it different depending on the website but thanks!
Directly from the Air Force ROTC website:

ACADEMICS
  1. SAT composite of 1240 or ACT composite of 26
  2. Cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher

Oh okay thanks! I wasn’t looking in the right places

The SPL, eagle, GPA, 3-4 varsity sports, honors/ AP (challenged yourself) all are very strong. Just be specific on how you are doing 4 varsity sports in what is typically 3 seasons (did you stop one to start another, or are you literally doing 2 in one season?).
can you possibly serve as a captain on any of your sport teams? Think scholar-(Strong) -athlete (strong, captain rank would be an addition), leader (pretty strong here too but be able to articulate how you are a leader in the classroom, athletic field, scouts (already have),and in other aspects of your life.

Measure your performance on the fitness tests (again well documented on the tests of Marines, Navy, Army, Air Force) and see where you can improve.

I think the point has been made but take both the ACT and SAT as some do better on one v another, and leverage the free tutoring available to bring up your composite/ overall scores. If that doesn't work, then explore options for Kuman or paid tutoring. You can do it but it may take some work- start now. This will be a blocker to your dream until that gap is closed.

Get your applications in early and make your recommendation requests for this AND college before the end of this school year.

Thanks for your interest and willingness to serve - also recommend applying to as many branches as you'd be interested to serve so that you have plans A-B-C-D lined up. for Air force a 23 is not YET competitive - so fix that. And, do some mock interviews- lots of good details on this site.

Good luck!

Thank you for the reply sir! To your Captain issue yes I am a varsity captain for all of those sports teams and doing tennis and baseball in the same season, I should have listed that prior but this was just kind of a rough draft. I am also a 3 year scholar athlete, varsity 3 years for football and baseball, 4 years for wrestling and tennis. If there is any need to mention me being a Brotherhood member in the Order of the Arrow I can also list that. The ACT is something I plan to work on heavily starting now and in the upcoming months, and as far as the SAT goes I need to take that soon. I’m mainly interested in the Air Force and the Navy so I plan to apply for both, but definitely leaning towards Air Force. Thanks again for the reply!

Very strong. Yes, recommend you denote the brotherhood of the Order of the Arrow as it shows a service and mentorship experience for those familiar with it and not every eagle or scout takes the time for those service/ initiation activities. Honestly overall, if you're doing it, put it on the app. You'll be able to point out where you are a captain and when you were varsity on the app. That's great.

So, I wouldn't discount the army as a plan C and you may wish to look at Merchant marine/ coast guard options too. And SAs if you want. If you can tackle the applications for school and ROTC?/ SAs in the summer it will help you - it's a gauntlet of recommendations, fitness tests, transcripts, applications, essays. The interviews will likely be in the fall.

Best of luck

Awesome! I’ll list anything that’s deemed mentionable. This may be a dumb question but may I ask, what exactly is the Merchant Marine option? I think I’m leaning towards Coast Guard as a plan C simply because I enjoy water and swimming and things like that. But I’ll definitely keep an open mind on other options!
Also, am I still eligible to be in these ROTC programs with the credentials I have? Let’s say I don’t get the scholarships, I could still be in these ROTC programs, or is there still that act or sat requirement?

Awesome other than ACT. Other have provided the minimum, but aim for a 30 which is around the average. A little lower would probably be ok provided you can also interview well, but shoot for as high as possible.

That’s great to hear, as I said I am working extremely hard to get that ACT score up, hopefully I succeed in doing so, thanks for the reply!
