Hey everyone. I just completed my pre-candidate questionnaire and was assigned a mentor ALO. What is a mentor ALO, and what should I include in my first email to them? Thanks!

Hi!

I'm a Mentor ALO. I'm also an Evaluator ALO (the bad guy).

As a mentor ALO my role is to be your (the candidate) mentor; a person that has the knowledge and experience relating to the entire application process. I have "been there, done that, got more than my share of t-shirts" from this process, including when I did it in high school! I have helped, literally, hundreds of candidates navigate the shoal waters of the USAFA process. It's murky, turbulent, often confusing, and frequently frustrating. That's when I'm at my best because I can usually clear all of it up! If I can't, I have direct access to the folks up at USAFA/RRS (that's the selections folks) and they'll get me an answer.

So, in short: I'm your go-to-guy, your point-of-contact, someone local that can help whenever you need it!!

And since I'm also here...you can ask me too!

Thank you for the help! That's good to know I get someone to help me out a little. What should I include in my first email to my mentor ALO, since usafa applications are telling me to reach out to them?

I like to receive an introductory e-mail! It shows me the candidate is proactive, which you really need to be in this process!

A simple: "Dear Col/Lt Col/Major, or whatever their rank is, I am XXXX and I recently completed my PCQ for the USAFA. It is my desire to secure an appointment to the class of 2027. I received an email informing me that you are my mentor ALO. I wanted to introduce myself, tell you a little about me, and ask if there's anything you think I should be focusing upon now?

And then tell them a bit about you: why the academy? What are your goals/dreams? That sort of thing. Less than a resume, but more than a two-sentence "hello..."

Make sense?
