Appointment Insider Info - Read at your own emotional risk!

Okay...

I called up to USAFA/RRS...they're the selection folks and explained what's going on here. After a discussion they agreed to tell me that the majority of appointments are being made NOW. The "main board" is now meeting (they would NOT tell me when, how often, etc.) and is making offers. They said that will go on most of the month, although depending upon "anything and everything" (my comment) it might take longer.

In other words...candidates will be hearing from now until April, as we've said all along.

There's no "set date" to receive notification, etc., it'll just "happen" or it won't.

I know, not the answer folks want to hear; ya'll want something definitive. Well, at the risk of sounding trite: get used to it, this is the military!

The wait, mailbox stalking, angst...continues.

Thank you so much for clarifying this for all of us!

Flieger- Thanks so much; this clarifies things. We will wait, and wait, and wait until the day arrives. If he is put on the waitlist, does that occur at the same time?

USAFA doesn't "have" a "waitlist" per se, or at least in my career they've never used that term.

Rather, they "rack and stack" all the candidates and then draw a line: those above the line are offered appointments, those below are "on the edge" and will be offered appointments IF folks above turn them down.

That's pretty much how its been explained to me when I've gone up and spoken with the folks there. It's probably a VERY simplistic explanation, but that's how the RRS folks liked to describe it.

Just for another "what I heard" about this, although Flieger's word is probably always the most accurate.

I called my counselor today to ask about updating my activities and resume, and she said that as of March it is too late for that because the final review boards have begun. She also said that regular admissions will be this month, and the individual notifications will begin in April, "So look for an online status change in the beginning of April."

Just seems to fit the idea that this month they will be stacking all the regular admissions candidates and drawing a line somewhere, then the notifications will be made in April. So maybe rather than "all appointments have been made" it could be said that the final appointments are being lined up and all final WCSs are being completed.

Just an idea from what I heard. I am so nervous that this is it! I hope my best this year is good enough to find me a spot anywhere above that line

My son just got an email from Admissions: "you’ve completed everything for your file that you have control of. All candidates that have completed their files will be notified in early April whether they have an appointment to the Academy or not."

My Dad contaced a close friend on the admissions board at the Academy and he said they are in the middle of selecting kids for appointments still and most of the remaining won't go out until the end of March

AHHHHH! I have done it again! This is so DEJA VU from two years ago when my son went through this. I swore this time while my daughter goes through this I would not watch the boards. Well, here we are. I was really good until this week. All I can say is.....Back Up Plan. I am hopeful for my daughter, but we have kept it really low key. Even though she has already been accepted into 8 schools with scholarship, I see the angst building. For the first time, she came home asking if the mail had arrived. My advice......Deep breathing, enjoy life and stay away from the mailbox!:thumb:

I asked a question about updating my file with a new award (about a week ago) and my admissions counselor left me a message (5 days ago) saying that yes I could update it and also that most offers of appointment for direct entry would go out at the beginning of April or end of March.

Interesting. I was asking if an update for getting the rank of Eagle Scout in early April would be too late, and she said it's already too late. Either way, for my situation I'm pretty sure April would be just too late. bummer

For those of you who are holding onto an appointment you are impacting someone else's life.

Sooner or later you have to make a decision. The clock is ticking down. There is one thing if you are awaiting a result from another SA or ROTC, another if you still can't make the decision while holding all of the cards and say I have to X date and I am going to wait.

The military's motto is service before self. You take care of each other before you care for yourself. That is how you become a great officer like Gen. Gould or Powell.

Perfect example: A friend of mine (my congressional district, same nomination received for AFA) got a USMA appointment in November and USNA in December. He is 100% sold out to USMA (Dad went there, wants infantry, has been wearing Army t-shirts every day of his life, talks only about West Point) but won't accept his appointment because he wants to know that he was good enough to get into these 3 academies. By hanging on this long, he's holding back people at two other academies (maybe me :frown:)

You are suggesting that the SAs that he doesn't choose are going to accept one less person than their goal?

No.
At Air Force, it should pretty much just make it take much longer for the next person on the list. But at USNA, wouldn't the next person go to the National Pool and then be competing against everyone else in the pool instead of just the people on his nomination slate?
Either way it works out that someone waits much longer. My real point is that talking to this person it seems a little obnoxious that he's "envelope-collecting"- seeking a THIRD appointment he has absolutely no intention of using.

While sooner is more desirable while you are waiting, eventually is considerably better than never. If it's meant to be...it will.

Agreed. If he never had ANY intention of attending any SA other than WP, once he had his USMA appointment then it was probably time to give up the others. However he did earn those appointments and it should be his decision about when to release them.

You're right. I realize that Appointees should make timely decisions about which of their appointments to accept. However, they did earn those appointments justly. I myself am trying to decide between USMA and USNA, and I won't have made up my mind until I visit the Naval Academy. While I don't want to hold up the Appointment of someone else, I don't want to make a decision to fast... after all, it is a life changing one.

Those who's credentials are good enough to be in that position have earned the right to wait as long as they want, up until the hard deadline.

Of course, and you have earned the right to take as much time as you need, up until the deadline.

Army,

You have every right to wait until you visit.

That is the thing, you need to feel it out, you are not delaying it because you are collecting envelopes. You are delaying the decision because you need to have all of your ducks in a row.

I do not believe anyone begrudge you that right.

It is when there are people who have no intention of accepting because they got their number 1 choice in hand, yet stay for self-gratification or status that upsets people.

The AFA this yr is dramatically reducing the apptmts. It is always stressful to go through the process, be even more so now, knowing that the traditional 1600 BFE's are being knocked down to the 1300 marker.

It isn't the appointees fault that this is occurring, but again, if they know without a doubt that they aren't going to go pull your name from the pile. Serving in the military is not a "me" thing. Lesson 1 at BCT...teamwork.

To me there is always overlap between SA's and usually it has to do with career goals.

USNA, USCGA and USMA --- helo's
USNA, USCGA and AFA --- planes
USMA, USNA, AFA --- Rangers, Seals, CRO

Yet, if you want to be in a tank you don't want the AFA or USNA.
Want to be on a boat as a SWO or a sub, you don't want the AFA or USMA
If you want to be a missile guy, you aren't going to want USMA or USNA.
If you want to be the guy fishing fliers out of AK waters, you know it is CGA.

It is hard when there is overlap, not so hard when you know your career path.

3Q'd means that you are medically, academically and physically qualified in the application process.
