Good Luck to those who wait
I can't help but remember our waiting game....both times. I know, I know, this is an EA thread where everyone desperately wants the BFE. But....and I am hoping none of you will end up where we were 2 years ago....sometimes it takes more than one try to get in.
I say this not to be a downer, but as encouragement. My son wanted CGA. And only CGA. And he was late coming to the party, only discovering this hidden gem of a school during the fall of his senior year. Sure he looked (half-heartedly) at a number of other schools, but the enthusiasm just wasn't there. Then he stumbled upon CGA quite accidentally when a friend mentioned applying. He did his homework and BAM! It was very clear that the kid had found his dream school.
Well....he completed his application, and DoDMERB by the end of December, but he obviously missed EA, so into the regular pool he went. Where he waited and waited and waited. April 15th was the magical date to hear one way or the other and he didn't hear anything....turns out they were a little overloaded that year so final notices went out towards the end of April. Come the last week of April he heard....WAITLISTED! And not even in the "A" waitlist group (20 or so kids), but the "B" waitlist group (another 30 plus kids, or more). Sigh. So, he pretty much knew that it was unlikely that he would receive an appointment, but he hung on to a glimmer of hope. On June 1st he got notice that the waitlist was officially closed, and that he should consider his other options.
We thought it was game over. But, son had other ideas. He went to community college, took a 4/c-like schedule (did well), took up a new sport (did well), retook the SAT and improved his score. Continued his volunteering, etc, etc. All this to show CGA that he was serious about becoming a Coast Guard officer, and that CGA was his A-1, top of the heap, undeniable first choice for getting there. It worked. He got his appointment after a year and a half of hard work and perseverance. Worth every minute of the wait.
So, for those who wait, have a plan B. But that doesn't mean Plan A isn't hiding right around the corner, waiting for your kid to go and get it. The extra year did wonders for our son, and when younger son applies we know that if the same thing happens, it may just be for the best.
Good luck.
