The application window is finally opening on 2/1/13 (for fall 2014 college start date). Am I correct in the understanding that once DS has created an account and started entering information, he can stop part-way through the application and go back to it at a later date without losing any information? He took the SAT & ACT in December but is going to take them again in Jan/Feb (and possibly a 3rd time, depending upon the results of the 2nd round of tests). So, we definitely don't want to back ourselves into a corner by being forced to finalize the application before he's done taking the tests as many times as he feels is necessary. Also, he's only in his spring semester of his junior yr. of high school, so I would prefer to wait until he knows his final GPA for the year before we finalize the application.

Lastly, I've read on the forum that applications should be completed no later than the end of summer in order to be ready for the first board in October. Is there any advantage to completing the application ASAP, versus waiting until summer?

Personally I think it's better to wait until this school year has ended to start the application. This way he can have his complete transcript, he may also know if he will have any new leadership positions for his senior year that can be included in the application.

This will also give him some time to research schools and ROTC Battalions.

Anything can be added, updated, or changed on the application up to the deadline for the first board, after that only the ACT/SAT or school changes can be updated.

A lot of times a student will not know what new leadership positions they will have, captain of a sports team, school officer, president of a club or organization until the start of their senior year. Your son will have time once school starts to update his application prior to the deadline. just make sure his updates are complete a couple weeks before the deadline and confirm the updates with Cadet Command.

I am sending you a PM

I agree with kinnem, just wait until the end of spring to start. You want to have it done by the end of summer, but it is better to have all of your ducks in a row instead of coming back and forth every time changing/editing etc.

Boy, do I wish I had asked this question sooner! We've been scrambling trying to visit as many schools as possible before the Feb. 1st application window opened up. It definitely threw the cadre at these schools for a loop when we visited in December & January and our DS told them he was a junior in high school. One of them was impressed that he was researching things so early and the other one looked at him like he had two heads!

You've probably got until early October to have your file complete. I would use all that time (without procrastinating). You don't get any bonuses for being first.
Had an applicant who listed Boy's State on his application, because he anticipated attending. When I called him on the fact that his name didn't appear on the Boy's State list he had to admit that he didn't attend after all. You can start now, but remember that it is a lot easier to fill in the information on that application the first time than it is to get things changed. Also keep in mind that most PMS's attend camp, so your interview will have to be scheduled for late August/early September for best effect.

 Thanks for the laugh. However, it was very smart of you to start as early as you did with the college visits. Others will be scrambling to do that next fall when ideally it should have been complete already. And... you'll have time for second visits and adding other schools to your list for alternates, plan B, C, D, and E, etc.
