CGAS appointment

We have been on spring break and haven't been able to check our mail since last week. Any packets yet?

I originally thought we'd wait until we see what's in the packet to start working on the forms, but seeing that all the online forms are due May 1, I don't think it's a good idea to wait any longer. There's so much to do, and we need to get vaccines taken care of and a bank account to open! Did everyone else start on the forms too? Civilian college parents will never understand what we SA parents go through. Good luck everyone!

My DD has started filling out forms because so many different processes in sending forms and specific instructions. I say get started now, it takes time to complete. My DD has a credit union account for several years, can she keep that account or does she have to open a different account?

Yes! Sent those all in last week as well.

Oh my... we better get moving. By the way, do they all need polio vaccine before CGAS? What if you're still 17? The wording was a little unclear. It seemed like they wanted it but only if you're 18 or older. Are we reading it wrong?

I would think it's ok, but I wasn't sure what to do either and asked a banking account question on USCGA forum too. Is your DD a minor, or is she 18+? If she's had it open for a while, is it joint with a parent or her own account? We were told by banks that we have to be co-owners of the account until she's 18, but do you think that's ok with USCG payments? We were leaning towards Navy Federal just because it's conveniently located on campus, but everyone is saying USAA is good. Now we're torn. Neither branch is anywhere near us, so B of A would actually be much easier but... what's everyone else doing with the bank situation?

I wished DD was 18 already. Going into the military at 17 creates so many unnecessary questions compared to if you're 18 already.

DS went ahead and got his polio shot. But he is 18. I'm not sure about 17 year olds.

DS is keeping his local bank account and just taking his debit card and checkbook with him. ATM will work to get started as the check will be direct deposited.

Hoping2021 time for a deep breath . Our DS (2018) reported in using his local bank account that my wife was joint owner. The only issue was minimum balance for ATM withdrawals. This year he opened a USAA account for a credit card and later a bank account. He chose USSA over Navy Federal because he also plans to use them for car insurance next year. He was fine for the first two years with his local bank account.

I'm just wondering, but I just happen to be a member of this forum and was informed here that the CGAS forms were up online (and they're due 5/1/2017.) I feel like there are plenty of folks who aren't on this forum, just sitting at home waiting for the appointment packet to come with all the information, not even aware of the due date. Won't they miss the 5/1 deadline? Did we miss an earlier email or memo telling us to get started on the forms already? I'm just so glad everyone is so informative here to help us out.

Thanks for the info! Ok, so there shouldn't be any issues with an account that's co-owned with a parent then? For the "account title" where you fill out the form for direct deposit, do you remember if they just wanted your son's name or both your son and your wife's? Sorry, I'm sure it's probably not fresh in your memory but...

I've had the same thought.

I could be wrong in my memory of CGAS last summer also mine was 18 when it all went down. When the kiddos report in if they are not 18 you basically sign them away to Uncle Coastie. I do remember a few going up to the table with parents. R.E.M. They are enlisted as an E2 for their CGAS year. From there I believe they are able to open a bank account through Navy Fed or USAA with out a parent. The one thing we did was open a navy Fed account before she went. It was then transferred to an enlisted account. (My parents lives near Major naval installation and they had an actual branch where we got to sit down with one of the bankers) At the academy she was able to change things over once she given her military ID.

Another thing I did was I made sure the kid put me on her medical records to be released to. I still have her on my policy when she turned 18 and before she left for the academy. Actually my insurance company sent me a notice I would no longer be able to access any of her medical after 18.

Thank you so much for this information re: bank account. This is exactly what I was wondering about. I'm sending you PM.

I believe he put down his name, bank name, routing number, etc. and all was fine. As I said earlier, he did it this way until recently when he opened his USAA account.
