Hello all, I came from a children's home in Hockley, TX and was chosen out of 88 kids to attend Hargrave Military Academy on a academic/wrestling scholarship. Back at home I was actively engaged in leadership positions with my church, community, hurricane Harvey relief operations, AFJROTC , FCA, the leadership council and a student employee/athlete. I have progressed through the ranks at Hargrave Military Academy and have really become a stronger student academically. I got accepted into the Naval Academy Summer Seminar and was awarded a scholarship due to financial struggles. I firmly believe that God has got a plan for me as I have been presented with so many blessings. I recently took the ACT for the first time and scored an 18. It is no where with in the typical scores that would make you "competitive" however I have not taken algebra 2 so that explains as to why my scores are so low. I intend on coming to summer school here and focusing on retaking some classes to bring my GPA up from a 3.45 to a 3.6 and prepare for my SAT/ACT. I was told by the dean of students and academic dean to not worry: "There is always NAPS (the Naval Academy Prep School) that can help you get ready for the academy. Am I headed in the right direction? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this and God Bless!

It sounds like you have the right stuff. Make mastering the SAT and/or ACT your focus this summer. Just like all your competition will be doing. And get to work on your nominations. At the same same, open the NROTC app and get it done. If you don't get an appointment this time, start over and do it again. Don't give up the ship!

This is a little different than the normal "chance me" posts, where the poster lists all sorts of achievements and asks if they will get in, with the inevitable answer being " it depends". It appears that OP has faced challenges, and is making the most of the opportunities that he has, but the Achille's heel is grades and ACT/SAT. The Dean's admonition about NAP's is a little misplaced, as there is a minimum score necessary to qualify as an Official Candidate and even be considered for NAPS. I don't know if Admissions publishes that number, and frankly it appears to be variable -perhaps some combination of GPA and SAT/ACT, but would encourage OP to get those scores up to eliminate any issue.

To OP -- Don't let this discourage you .. you recognized the issue and have a plan. Go out there and knock it out of the park. Remember that 100% of those that don't try will not succeed. Best of Luck !

I would very strongly recommend that you find out who the BGO is for your school and meet with the BGO. It is important the the BGO is aware of the difficulties/"special circumstances" that you have faced. I know of cases where applicants who faced particular challenges were not really considered by USNA (because of low scores, etc) until the challenges were recognized by USNA Admissions. In one case, while doing Senatorial Interviews, I encountered someone who was facing massive challenges in even getting their full application completed and I called my AC and he reached out to Admissions and things came together for that applicant.
