Class of 2016-Mailbox Stalkers Club

Yes. They award points for Scouts, Boys State, and for different community service. The way they do that is not publically known. Since no one on these forums is on the selection committee, not sure if you can get much more information.

Good luck and happy stalking. :thumb:

Thank you! He has a national one of a kind award - I had no idea if they had a way to "measure" it.

Oh and talk about heart failure... I had a large thick white envelope in the mail today (not it - stupid catalog for office supplies) - but for future reference, what color is the envelope? White, Manilla, FREAKING NEON GREEN???

Thanks!

It will be White and it will stated Appointment Letter Enclosed or something to that effect on it.

White, but there will not be any doubt when you see it....Trust me ;)
Instructions to Appointee Enclosed.

My mailbox is down the street in a neighborhood lock box (new subdivisions do this now I guess) and it's at eye level - so I get an eye level view of the SIDE of an envelope! I've told my mailman what i'm waiting for - perhaps he can put a sticker on the outside of my mailbox when it finally comes??? That way I don't pass out and knock my head on the side of my car... LOL

My MoC called me last week and said that I should be receiving my appointment in the mail this week. I'm hoping that it comes soon.

I am incredibly grateful to have received an appointment to the USAFA, do not get me wrong, but I was surprised with the packet. It was certainly not what I was expecting.

You're actual Certificate of Appointment will come from your ALO, later. The BFE is basically just the information packet that lets you know what is coming your way. My son received his Certificate of Appointment in a wonderful ceremony during the awards assembly at his school last year. It is certainly a little more "Impressive" than the BFE.

DoDMERB requested additional information/documentation from my DS, which he provided. The portal now shows his medical status as "qualified".

Now we wait.....

Update from a MB Stalker Class of 2015

Hi everyone. I was right where you now this time last year. DS had applied to only two programs...USAFA and Virginia Tech Corp of Cadets/AFROTC. Unlike many on this forum who are very familiar with the application process, nomination process etc., we were totally in the dark. So much so that DS only applied for one nomination! However, he did receive a nom from that Congressman. This congressman selects a principal and then the other 9 are "alternates". This congressman also always selects a principal nom who is currently IN ROTC and a freshman in college. So DS only had a chance at being the prin nom if there were no current ROTC college freshmen in the mix. Of course that did not happen, and the prin nom was a college freshman, ROTC student. As DS had not applied for a nom from any other source, he was pretty much out of the running for a slot at USAFA. But we held out hope, until the day arrived that brought the QNV letter to our home. DS was disappointed to not have been selected but was VERY excited about his admission to VT and into the Aerospace Engineering program there. Then, a funny thing happened. We learned that the prin nom had been REJECTED by the USAFA on academic grounds. It seems that his first semester grades were WAY below par and he was out. So we thought "maybe" for DS. As luck would have it, there was one other candidate who received a nom from our Congressman who was ALSO a college freshman in ROTC, so that individual took the prin nom place of the disqualified prin nom. Oh well! However, DS was told that he was next in line and that if he reapplied his freshman year, as a member of the Corp and AFROTC, that there was a STRONG possibility that he would be the prin nom. And that became the plan for DS.

Well, a funny thing has happened. DS became infatuated with VT, the Corp and loves his AFROTC detachment at VT. He busted his butt, made the Commandants List for Academic Excellence taking 18 hours, was appointed to the AFROTC Community Liaison Committee and excelled in PT. He knew after a month or so that he would not be reapplying to the USAFA, even though his chances of being the prin nom were VERY high. Instead, he was put in the "rack and stack" nomination list by the AFROTC detachment for an in-college AFROTC scholarship. He just learned this week that he was selected by the USAFROTC HQ to receive a Type 2 AFROTC scholarship, which will cover him for the next three years...tuition, books and a monthly stipend.

When DS received the QNV letter, I will admit that I was WAY more upset than he. I thought "excellent SAT, Eagle Scout, numerous awards, a NASA Internship, etc.....are these people crazy?". However, as cliche as it sounds, things really DO happen for a reason. I know that DS is THRIVING in his current situation, and is enjoying the normalcy of a large, "normal" college situation while still being able to pursue his goal of serving his country and qualifying for Pilot.

I know that this is VERY long post, but I want to encourage the Stalker/Reapply Club to think about all of the wonderful options that exist outside of the academy. Our son chose not to pursue that path again, even with an "almost" guaranteed prin nom because he found his calling elsewhere.

I got through my range of emotions last year with the help of a very savvy member of this group, PIMA. What a blessing and voice of reason she was and I see still continues to be. I made a promise to her that I would return to this site this year and share my "story" so that others might benefit from our experience. I hope that I have honored that commitment. If anyone has any questions that I can answer, feel free to ask on this site or in a PM. I don't know a lot about the process of reapplying since DS did not choose that path, but I know a LOT about how embracing other options can and do turn out to be the best outcome. My final word of advice? LISTEN TO PIMA and heed her messages and advice. She knows of what she speaks. And good luck to all of you as you stalk, reapply or follow another path.

vamom,

thank you so much for sharing your story. That is one of the wonderful things about this group of people: the willingness to share. Those of us who started out in the dark are very appreciative.

I love vamom, and she is too kind!

However, I will state this again like I did last yr. to her.

Fate has a funny way of getting in the way.

TWE will be coming down, and many hearts will be crushed. Natural reaction is to say Heck Yeah will re-apply. Emotions are raw in April.

However, as time goes by, and they get excited for Plan B, their perspective changes.

Not denying AFA is great, and every AFA cadet/appointee should not be proud of this, I am saying AFROTC now has just as many officers with stars as the AFA. That if you want UPT, truly want it, you can get it out of AFROTC.

If you fold like a cheap suit upon receiving the TWE, this is not the world for you. If you use that as motivation, you will succeed. In the AD world you will constantly be tested, you will always fight for that #1 spot. AFA opens doors, but what you do when you pass through will matter more than the ring knocker.

vamom's DS came from a state that MOC's not only shared the wealth, but did principal. Her DS as a freshman entered with no AFROTC scholarship, and as she stated his stats were insane...went to a state MAGNET HS where he had to test to get in. VT in 2010 had over 31K applicants for 4K slots, and over the past 4 yrs has not taken more than 100 in total off their waiting list, in 10 they took 0! I know that because DD attends VT.

Her DS got one of the few IS scholarships awarded nationally...think Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory golden ticket.

His success is because he had a strong PLAN B.

VA you have honored the commitment. I said that to you because I knew you would bring hope, light and strength to every poster that are now in your position a yr later.

Thank you Pima, but you deserve all that I said and more! Now, how about one more question from me! Your comment about "the golden ticket" made me curious....any way to know how many in-college type 2 AFROTC scholarships were awarded? It makes not difference....just happy that DS was one of them! But just out of curiosity, is that number available?

I didn't realize that any of the VA districts did principal nominations! That is really tough when you're from a state as competitive as this one! I'm glad your son his happy, VAmom! I tell my son, and myself, the same thing! Wherever he ends up is where he's supposed to be. It would just be nice to know for sure where that will be! :thumb:

vamom, three freshmen in our AFROTC unit at Norwich received "surprise" Type-2 scholarships. I say surprise because all first semester we were told that basically no scholarships were going to be offered. For reference, two of the scholarships were for ME majors and the other was for Nursing

So true, Blamblin! And yes, there are those here in Va that do Prin Nom (I won't say our congressman's name due to my next few statements!)....but I must say (with no bias whatsoever) that based upon what happened to the original Prin Nom in our son's scenario, I'm not sure that "always" selecting a current AFROTC College Freshman is such a great strategy! Yes, hey have demonstrated that they want to serve by participating in ROTC, but there certainly could be more qualified high school seniors when compared to a college freshman, particularly if said college freshman is struggling academically. And in the situation that occurred when DS was nominated, I think that it is a bit of "egg on face" for a Congressman/Senator to have a Prin Nom who does not make the academic minimum to be able to attend the AFA and a second prin nom has to be selected. But in our case,I'm glad that the process was such that it was , as everything turned out better than best for DS!
