I would like to have photos of my DS other than the Lucky Bag shot. I have a couple of questions.

1) Can the photos be taken with the highest midshipman rank shoulder boards or do they have to be in their current rank?

2) Can they wear the long sleeve white uniform even if the photos are taken in another season?

Answers:

1. Yes and no. If they are a 2/C or lower, then they have to wear their current rank. For 1/C, they can wear the MIR (normal) 1/C shoulder boards or striper shoulder boards if they rate them. If they held a higher striper position or a the previous semester, I am in the camp of them wearing their highest shoulder boards for photos being okay as long as they stick to wearing what they currently rate day to day.

2. Yes.

The interesting thing to me, with ‘senior pics’, especially close to commissioning, is they cannot yet wear their new Officer cover. I assumed he could ‘just for pics’….but NOPE!

Officer photos will be taken later in the fleet. Record photo in khakis, and usually another photo in SDBs for bios.

He had three stripes summer, two now, and not sure about Spring. Didn't know if I could have him take the pictures with the 3 stripes or not?
The issue with the yearbook photo is the he would have had to get the FDB jacket re-striped between summer and now.

Otherwise, if he goes to a studio out in town, no one will care what uniform or boards he's wearing.

Stripes come and go. DD went from a few to a lot to a few to a lot — all in two years. For photo purposes, I doubt anyone will care — either while they’re taking the photo or when others are looking at the photo down the road.

Weird. Ours were in FDB and only head shots. No way for anyone to see your rank. Times change.
Lucky Bag photo is still headshots only. The photographer will take other photos in the same session that can be purchased.

I took the discussion to be related to other private photography sessions. Beyond Lucky bag (still headshots for the yearbook). It’s pretty common. In fact, lots of Mids to sessions.

When do mids take their Lucky Bag photos? Just curious since I thought we would get them pretty early on in the year but I guess not

Plebes?
Every years Lucky Bag is different but all I've ever seen Plebes do is a group pic of each company's plebes all together somewhere like a stairwell.

If I remember correctly Plebe year DS had Lucky Bag picture taken mid to late fall.

BTW, that damn book is HEAVY. Could be used as a weapon, or an anchor. He had stored it at his sponsor's and when I was headed home from 2/C weekend he sent it with me. It would have put my bag overweight, and overfull. So I put it in my shoulder bag. Holy crap. I weighed it at the luggage check-in. 13 pounds. It's gorgeous, and well done, evidence of the MIDN writing it makes it unique and their own, great quality paper, and causes one to need a chiropractor.

They usually have times in the fall and have make-ups in the spring. It behooves you to get it done early since they are a pain (have to wear Infantry Dress (the official name for the parade uniform... there is a USNA fun fact for you) and you have to wait in long lines. If you are delinquent, they can take some type of punitive action against you, but I forget what it was.

@Heatherg21 They are commonly used as doorstops. A lot of them stay in Bancroft because most don't pick them up on distribution day. The only Lucky Bag most people take is their 1/C one. Firsties get funny write-ups written by their friends, so it is the one edition with some form of personalization. All the underclass ones just have your standard headshot and maybe some extra photos depending on your ECAs, sports, billet, etc.

Also fun fact, the Lucky Bags are all available online. I was able to find images of my grandfather, dad, and cousin. The quality of the paper in the real version is sublime.
I don't think my then plebe wanted it. He saved it and his shoulder boards each year for his mom. He's a good egg.
