Happy days

I'm also fairly certain that since he is a previous holder of the position MARAD could write the announcement in such a way as to deep select him and not go through the typical government hiring shenanigans.

An alumni, with some higher education/academy leadership experience and a flag officer. If all three can't be done I would say drop the alumni requirement and bring in the alumni perspective via the assistant or another number 2 position.

Flag Officer would be my lowest priority, and in truth the constant flow of previous FO/GOs has been part of the problem IMNSHO. Anyone effectively leading even a moderate size group/unit/organization would have the needed skills to be successful. Understanding the role KP plays in the greater Maritime Industry and where it needs to go in the future to stay relevant is of far greater importance.

It's not so much the alumni perspective as the industry perspective. Having done logistics in the military is far less important than having been in the actual maritime industry.

McDermott has spent quite a bit of time with RADM Buzby lately. He left teaching his Terr. Nav. class in the middle of the trimester to go to DC for a month under kind of unusual circumstances. Now he is back on campus but doing no teaching, just going to a lot of closed door meetings with higher ups. My DD adores him as a teacher because she says he knows the difference between BS and what's important. Sounds like a good quality in a superintendent.

I have an interesting theory from my DD. Captain McDermott.
I've seen his name come up elsewhere too. I was recalled with him a while back, he would be fantastic!!!

McDermott will never be in charge of an academic institution. Guy is not a good teacher. A few people like him because he talks big, but there's a reason he only teaches the plebe classes. Commander Hunt '73 taught Tnav my freshman year, and I know that McDermott will never be 25% of the teacher Hunt was. Hunt was meticulous, McDermott just talks a lot. The BS that he thinks he's avoiding is probably important. That class is the foundation for your entire time as a deckie.

We had a flag officer, Engel, when I was there. His twin brother was the Super at Coast Guard, where they both graduated. As a bit of trivia, his niece was a regular on the old Mary Tyler Moore show. The Alumni hated the guy so much that at our graduation, a plane flew over, mid ceremony, towing a banner, "Save KP, Fire Engel". At first we thought our class was going to pay for that. . . but no.
