No More Public AirShows

I have no problem with the thunderbirds/blue angels flying for graduation. I think it does serve a purpose. But you are correct that priorities are wrong. Here's some of my favorite wastes that the government ISN'T CUTTING.

1. A reality TV show in India. The Department of Agriculture’s Market Access Program spends $200 million a year to help U.S. agricultural trade associations and cooperatives advertise their products in foreign markets. In 2011, it funded a reality TV show in India that advertised U.S. cotton.

2. Studying pig poop. The Environmental Protection Agency awarded a $141,450 grant under the Clean Air Act to fund a Chinese study on swine manure and a $1.2 million grant to the United Nations for clean fuel promotion.

3. Amtrak snacks. Federally subsidized Amtrak lost $84.5 million on its food and beverage services in 2011 and $833.8 million over the past 10 years. It has never broken even on these services.

4. Using military exercises to boost biofuels. The U.S. Navy bought 450,000 gallons of biofuels for $12 million—or almost $27 per gallon—to conduct exercises to showcase the fuel and bring it closer toward commercialization. It is the largest biofuel purchase ever made by the government.

5. Conferences for government employees. In 2008 and 2009 alone, the Department of Justice spent $121 million to host or participate in 1,832 conferences.

6. “RoboSquirrel.” $325,000 was spent on a robotic squirrel named “RoboSquirrel.” This National Science Foundation grant was used to create a realistic-looking robotic squirrel for the purpose of studying how a rattlesnake would react to it.

7. Cupcakes. In Washington, D.C., and elsewhere across the country, cupcake shops are trending. The 10 cupcake shop owners who received $2 million in Small Business Administration loan guarantees, however, can only boast so much of their entrepreneurial ingenuity, since taxpayers are backing them up.

8. Food stamps for alcohol and junk food. Though they were intended to ensure hungry children received healthy meals, taxpayer-funded food stamps were instead spent on fast food at Taco Bell and Burger King; on non-nutritious foods such as candy, ice cream, and soft drinks; and on some 2,000 deceased persons in New York and Massachusetts. Food stamp recipients spent $2 billion on sugary drinks alone. Improper SNAP payments accounted for $2.5 billion in waste, including to one exotic dancer who was making $85,000 per year.

9. Beer brewing in New Hampshire. Despite Smuttynose brewery’s financial success and popularity, it is still getting a $750,970 Community Development Block Grant to build a new brewery and restaurant facilities.

10. A covered bridge to nowhere. What list of government waste would be complete without a notorious “bridge to nowhere”? In this case, it’s $520,000 to fix the Stevenson Road Covered Bridge in Green County, Ohio, which was last used in 2003.

Yes, I also recently saw the June 1 end date for the Blue Angels but don't have any concrete infor about their graduation plans. Although there are a lot of excellent points on all sides of this for 29 pages now, it does make me wonder why they both did not stop April 1.

aseanag,

please link the Blue Angels performing at USNA. I have yet to see any link, and I live in NoVA. I googled it too. Please link your info, but even when you do recall the fact the Navy has their budget and the AF has theirs. It is like you and your sister in law, although family working on the same budget.

Here is what it states on the 4th of March.
But the announcement of Obama’s commitment to speak comes when the academy faces a host of possible cutbacks from federal sequestration. Those cuts mean Commissioning Week may not include regular events such as an air show by the Blue Angels.

I could not find one that says Blue Angels won't cut until June 1st.

Not saying it is not fact, just would like to see a link.

But, let's go back on topic...this is the AF.

This is TIME's newest article only 5 hrs ago on March 7th.

Here is what grounding equals according to this article.
But grounding the six-plane Thunderbird fleet does free up 1,520 flights for combat training, Air Force officials say. It takes 36 such flights to make a garden-variety basic pilot combat-ready.

Bottom line: 42 more Air Force pilots good to go to war because of the Thunderbird grounding.

May I ask, is your child going rated? If so, and he/she was told that it frees up 1520 sorties, would they still say...get me the Thunderbirds?

Have they said I want a flyover?

I think that is also where we are confused as posters. We keep reading...as a parent, or a lurker, but not anything from 1 cadet.

Cadets have spoken out. After reading this thread I wouldn't comment either. If you read the begin of this thread you may find a different slant. Will send you the information about the Blue Angels shortly.
I do believe the Thunderbirds will still practice, I could be wrong. The Thunderbirds are not the only options being investigated.

This thread is insignificant. Less than 1% of all applicants visit these forums. Less than 1% of all cadets visit these forums. Unless you've got some survey that was sent out to the 1000+ Class of 2013 students, with their response, I wouldn't really say that the "Cadets have spoken out". Or that they are reading this thread or forum. The number that do is very small and is not a representation.

As for the part about: "The Thunderbirds are NOT THE ONLY OPTION being investigated". I find that MIND BOGGLING. You keep mentioning how having the air show / flyover is a "TRADITION". Yes, it is. But the tradition ISN'T ANY PLANE doing an air show / flyover. That's what you don't get. The tradition, is that it's the "THUNDERBIRDS" or the "BLUE ANGELS" for navy. It's being able to look up at the air show or flyover WITH PRIDE and say: "That's what I am NOW A PART OF. THEY REPRESENT ME!!!" That can't be said if it's some old P-52s or old bombers. Or WORSE YET, a foreign team like the Snow Birds. Agree or not, I can totally respect you and other parents looking for a way to get the "THUNDERBIRDS" to the graduation. I RESPECT THAT!!! I have no respect for trying to get another "OPTION". There is NO OTHER OPTION. Not if you want to talk about TRADITION. The TRADITION is the Thunderbirds. NOT THE PLANE.

Maybe Anikan Skywalker and his pod racer is an option.

We can all vouch for Skywalker's "Jedi Mind Meld" skills.

Sorry for the confusion CC but that is the plan. No Thunderbirds then we will go with 2nd or 3rd choice. Sort of like the Pukin Dogs Navy used 2011. Yes there are options. Maybe not everyone will be happy but there are other options.

This navy feed states that the Blue Angels are only canceling there shows in April.

The Pukin Dogs (a/k/a Naval Strike Fighter Squadron 143) is an active-duty Naval carrier squadron who flew in place of the Blue Angels due to the Angels being grounded after a mishap.

Are you planning on asking for a different Air Force unit to fly in place of the Thunderbirds?

The 2013 class exemplar is Gen Curtis LeMay, who piloted and commanded B-17, B-24 and B-29 aircraft in Europe and the Pacific during WWII. Commemorative Air Force CAF units have been contacted. There are many options currently being discussed.

A fly over by a B-17 or other WWII Aircraft would warm the hearts of every Army officer and enlisted since they were part of the Army Air Corps, being that the Air Force did not exist yet. It could be a whole new tradition.

I will say though, a B-17 with a couple P-51's as escort would look pretty cool.

It will also warm the hearts of 2013.

Haha, we did have our exchange cadets from AFA refer to the WP cadets a "big daddy Army".

AF cancels U.S. air shows, but not in Australia

Faced with a $14.2 billion shortfall this fiscal year, the Air Force is canceling air shows in the U.S. — but not one in Australia.

The service sent airmen and jets from the U.S. and Japan to this year’s Australian International Airshow from Feb. 26 to March 3.

“Approximately 220 U.S. service members along with the U.S. Air Force’s F-22 Raptor, C-17 Globemaster III, F-16 Fighting Falcon, B-52 Stratofortress, and KC-135 Stratotanker are supporting the AIA13, which allows a unique opportunity for the United States to showcase its aviation prowess and strengthen military-to-military ties with our Pacific allies and partners,” according to a news story from Pacific Air Forces.

“Overall, we estimate the cost at $780,000 including airlift and per diem expenses,”

From General Gould office,

Thunderbirds and Graduation:
I know that parents are disappointed about the Thunderbirds as are we at USAFA. Please understand that at this level there is nothing we can do. If you write General Gould he will not be able to do anything as this is a DoD/Air Force level decision based on budget concerns and mission essential needs.

Suggest you write your Congressmen, Senator, and the White House with your protest as it is above our level.

Thank you for you continued support.

Marie

I'm really hopping that's not from a government official, because if it IS from a govt., it's the least appropriate message I've read.

This was sent to our local Parents association. I am sure this was not official government statement.
