Orientation 2013

Dang, seems like the first session is the one to be at! Oh well, nothing you can do about schedule conflicts

Scheduling is a big one, but I'm going to session 1 because I only have until 1 May to decide, and I'm going to use this as the final evaluation. I didn't see anything that said I had to decide if I'm accepting the offer or not before orientation.

Desena, I think if you stay with one of the cadets (4 digs) that posts here or on CC, you'll have a much different perspective than the first one you had.

true. most of us 4digs have a really good perspective on things here, and can tell you how it REALLY is. same goes for everyone else: if you dont already have plans, everyone on here (nearly) would be willing to host you

Glad to hear that. I really hope so. Maybe the cynicism grows on you. I was with a bunch of firsties who were ready to get out of there. So, please change my mind. Then again, if Navy gets me when I go out there next month, I would hate to fall in love with both, and be even more torn! haha Anyway, I'm getting really excited. Only 5 more months of high school!!!!! :jump1:

so i'm going to the 2nd orientation. anyone interested in hosting me?

When you visit USNA, spare yourself the disappointing response from a firstie whose been hogtied to the academic, athletic, and military rigors for nearly four years. Don't ask the question, "If you had it to do all over again, would you have made the same decision?" Frankly, they may be midshipman, but they are still humans! I was in awe of the place, the people, the architecture, the history, the intensity, the order, the attention to detail, the cleanliness, the beauty, the...

Keep in mind, usually the fantasy is better than the reality, so what the heck, enjoy the illusion. All of the academies have their ecstatic and gruelling aspects. On the last day of our visit to USNA, I told my son that if he still wanted to go Navy, I'd support him. Yet, I wouldn't think less of him if he changed his mind. He'd go to either. I almost hope he doesn't have to decide between the two. What a mixed blessing that could be. I suppose you could promise yourself that you will never second-guess your decision during the hard times. You know, "Don't look back or you might turn into a pillar of salt!" Some people decide between two good options with a coin toss!

I forgot to mention, the showers. You think it a positive to have your own shower with marble walls, yes? You better be sure to get all of the soap scum off those walls. During room inspections they have a white glove and a black glove. The black glove is for evaluating the shower. You don't want to get "dinged" any white powder on that black glove!

Hazing? Nah! I call it, "Intense fellowship." (;-)p

If you haven't already, read the book, "A Sense of Honor", by Jack Webb. It's on the USNA recommended reading list. I read it in three days. Captivating. Maybe I should post these responses to your inquiry on the USNA site.

Back to the topic of "Orientation 2013": I will most likely attend the first session (if my parents can get a good deal on a plane ticket), because that will essentially extend my spring break... too back there isn't a session the first week of April, then it would be in my break.

Class of 2013

I just got a nomination notification today and I also got a letter of Assurance to boot. Last year in June I was selected and attended USAFA's summer seminar and it was my number one choice then like it is still now. It does not matter what set of days I will go for orientation because I am in! I have also applied to USNA, Harvard (AFROTC/NROTC), Univ. Chicago, Univ., Portland (AFROTC), Loyola Marymount Univ. (AFROTC), and the Univ. Washington (AFROTC/NROTC), but USAFA was always my number choice. My congressman told me that I was a shoe in for a nomination to USNA also but it was a moot point because USAFA was my first choice and my letter of Assurance from the ASAFA. So I will see you all in June of this year!!!

Congrats MKF! Now you can hold your USAFA appointment to Harvard with one finger on the other hand.

:thumb: That one! duh!

haha

Congratulations. That's awesome.

yah congrats mkf, i also applied to UW + AFROTC scholarship, but haven't heard back from either yet - i didnt complete the app as early because i was so focused on the USAFA app. btw everyone going to orientation is "already in".

hi, im new to this whole thing, but recently i recieved my appointment and will be at the orientation on april 13-14.

Another Letter of Assurance - 2 for 2 - 1st and 2nd choice

I just received another letter of Assurance from the USNA yesterday! So I think I am going with my friend who also got a nomination to visit the academy in Baltimore in the next couple of months. I have never visited the naval academy campus but let’s see what they are going to offer me. Did you know that the current value of a 4 year education at USAFA is currently worth $403K stated by my letter of assurance from the Air Force Academy? I think that all the academies are similar in cost. That is more than “any offer” for a scholarship I have seen “period”! Keep you posted.

Adding my daughter to the orientation line-up. We were initially looking at the first dates, but didn't want to miss out on Easter with family, with traveling on the 12th!

USAFA Packet & Orientation in April

Has anyone got their packet from the Air Force Academy yet? I am curious about the funding for the orientation in April for airfare to Colorado Springs, who pays for it? The academy or me (parents)? Can someone help me out? I think I am going at the end of April though because I am going to take the Naval Academy up on their invitation to me to spend a weekend at their campus in the next couple of months with my friend. I owe it to them to see what the Navy has to offer.

Thanks,
