Post-Appointment Class of 2027 Hangout: PTR, I-Day, What To Bring, Leave Periods…all that endless new stuff

Also, of UTMOST importance…..

GET FITTED PROFESSIONALLY FOR A PROPER SHOE, for YOUR foot. Go to a running store. They should look at your foot and have you try a few on a treadmill or similar.

There isn’t another thing you can do, beyond training, that will help more than having a proper shoe for your own foot. We are all different. And you will be putting a lot of miles in.

A proper shoe fit will help with shin splints, back, knee and hip pain. It’s worth the investment.
This is 100% true. Don’t buy the most expensive. Don’t buy the lightest. Follow this guidance and go to a specialty running store and have them fit you for the proper shoe. They’re different by brand and style and will have direct impact on running comfort and the ability to avoid injury.

Didn't go through Plebe Summer, so grain of salt this:

Recently went to a proper running shoe store where they fit me for running shoes. Oh my, the difference! They didn't charge me for the fitting, just for the new pair. Ended up getting Saucony's, and they feel great compared to what I had before. Running still isn't my favorite activity in the world, but it's better than what it was before :D
Love Saucony! I ran in college and competitively after I graduated and always wore Nike. My DS, newly appointed to ‘27, works at a running store. He turned me onto Saucony and I’ll NEVER go back. That being said, go get fitted and find the right shoe / brand for you.

I was also Nike lover before getting fitted mainly because I used to be able to find Nikes for relatively cheap up until a couple years ago. Now, they're around the same price as other brands, so I decided to get fitted. I still have my old Nikes for just wearing around because I only wear my Saucony's for runs.

I was a Nike person. I wore them for everything including basketball and running. During Plebe Summer we all wore New Balance. Glad they allow own shoes now. A few years ago I finally got fitted. I am an ASICS person. I still have my rather large Nike collection of Jordan’s, Air Force 1s and Blazers, but for working out and running it’s always ASICS.

I have never had a running store charge for a fitting. I bought my first pair at the store, but since then buy online as they are cheaper. I basically buy the same shoes each year, just the new version.

When I got back into running in the 2000's, I went with Saucony. I have used those exclusively since (except a brief stint where I ran Zoot shoes for triathlons as they were a co-sponsor with Gu for me). I've put thousands of miles in using their stuff, and set all my PRs in them.

The only model I don't like are my current Endorphins. I don't like the way they fit, they give me hot spots, and I just don't feel right in them. I bought them because they were almost half price from a sale on the Saucony site. Big mistake for me. I'm going back to the Kinvaras for the next pair.

Are Plebes allowed to receive packages during basic training? When my DS did CVW last November, his host advised him to have most of his things shipped ahead of time so it doesn't have to carried around on I-Day. I am not sure how accurate this information is, anyone know?
Also, my DS bought a good running shoes today after being fitted, This is the pair he will bring to Plebe summer. Can he wear this on I-Day so its one less thing to carry?
What are they wearing on I-Day before they get their uniforms? Is there a specific dress code?

Your son can literally check in with his paperwork, permit to report, ID, phone/charger and that’s it, and be FINE.

You will NOT be shipping stuff ahead of time. He will take very little, and it makes it very easy.

Use the search function for ‘what to bring to plebe summer’, or similar (or Google) and you will find tons of discussion.

Plebes will be issued everything they need….from clothing, to toothbrush, to stamps for writing home. Deodorant. Dental floss. Everything.

Here's some info on care packages from last year's PTR.

Mailing Address for Midshipmen

Plebes are able to receive mail during Plebe Summer. The proper format is:

MIDN John L. Doe
USNA Class of 2026
X Company
Annapolis, MD 21412

Plebes will learn their Company designators on I-Day. After Plebe Summer, Midshipmen will receive a P.O. Box number for use in receiving mail. The only zip code midshipmen can receive mail to is 21412.

Care Packages

“Care package” is a Midshipman term for goodies from home and is a very effective morale booster. However, during the controlled training environment of Plebe Summer, the sending of junk foods to a Plebe is highly discouraged.
  • Please limit the size of the shipping container to no larger than a shoe box. All food should be shipped in an airtight container.
  • All items should be single serving and non-perishable. There are no refrigerators available in Bancroft Hall for food storage. No medications or vitamins are allowed.
  • Junk food is highly discouraged during Plebe Summer.
  • The regimen of Plebe Summer is a controlled training environment and requires adherence to a healthy diet.
  • – Due to health concerns and storage limitations, excess junk food that cannot be stored or consumed immediately will be disposed of
  • Some suggestions for things to include in care packages:
  • – Individually wrapped granola bars or energy bars
  • – Powdered sports drink mixes NO CAFFEINE
  • – Letters from home

yes wear his running shoes on I day - my daughter wore shorts and shirt tucked in - hair in a bun. she had a small draw string bag, all paperwork in a folder, cell phone with charger in a zip lock with her name on it, with a few things from the what to bring list that will in the permit to report info he/she gets.

It’s a great idea, to also send a ‘shoebox’ size plastic container with a snap on lid, to store food items in. So the Bancroft ‘pets’ don’t get into it.

Many say to get ones that could help you stand out for picture ID. These are mostly parents though. I wouldn't want to be singled out by detailers for my shoes, so I wouldn't get anything too garish.

I got a Navy pair of sneakers and some bright laces, as a meet in the middle alternative.

perhaps each company and detailer is different, but my daughter and her company mates didn't experience anything different treatment because of the color of their shoes. The detailers remembered them for other things that made them stand out. For example, being late or slow, forgetting your name tag or cover, leaving your company mate behind, being too quiet... etc.....

Copy that, this is good things to know.

Just being overcautious. If you are any good plebe at all I assume you can overcome a reputation with detailers as weak as one based on shoe color

My daughter was overly cautious too about everything. I think that is completely normal. Her birthday fell during the 2nd week of Plebe Summer and told everyone in the family and her friends to NOT send anything that called attention to her birthday. The detailers knew it was her bday anyway (they find out), nothing came of it out of the ordinary shenanigans. Hindsight, she would have liked to get a few cards or a care package for her birthday from home to make her feel loved. Advice... don't over think it. Be you, be a good plebe and it's gonna suck no matter what, so you might as well be happy getting through all the suck!

At Navy OCS, I was yelled at during a room inspection for condensation on my window. On the exterior. On the 3rd deck.

Point is, there doesn’t have to be a reason, much of a reason, a valid reason, to attract attention. You just roll with it.

Rolling with "it" is key. So very true then and for those swearing in on I-Day.

Two types of plebes get yelled at:

Those that have (been yelled at)

Those that will (get yelled at)

My tip to appointees: Listen to what detailers say and not how (volume) they say it.

Go to a running store and get a free fitting that determines the right shoe for your level of “pronation.” That relates to your arches and how much they collapse when your foot strikes the ground. Getting the right type of shoe makes all the difference in the world when you’re running multiple miles nearly every day.

Don’t worry about being spotted in photos. One sure way of being found in pictures is if you’re the one on crutches because of shin splints or stress fracture. The right shoes can help prevent that. 😉
