Questions for a Freshman Cadet

Where do the clothes that we wear on I-Day go since basics and 4* aren't allowed civilian clothing until Recognition?

They will be collected by your cadre along with the bag you bring and anything else you do not need.

Is all that stuff just stored until we can go home for the first time or are they given back before that with the expectation that they will be sent home?

My squad was given there items back the Friday before parent's weekend, so i just sent it home with my family. You could just give them to your 3* coach if you're daring enough to try wearing them around in C-springs.

Don't be stupid and wear civies in the springs. You may not know it, but there are cadets EVERYWHERE! Someone WILL see you, and you don't want to test your odds whether or not they'll report you. I know of at least 5 cases of doolies getting busted for this.

As a side note, if you DO go out, please don't post pictures on facebook. It makes it harder for you to win your case when you say you didn't wear civies and then your commander pulls out pictures. :)

Oh I am not daring enough to even think about wearing civvies in Springs because I know there are cadets everywhere. I was just curious how we were suppose to get the stuff home to our parents because the risks are not worth the reward in this case.

With civvies, just tough it out.

Now, as recognition approaches, and if your coach is "legit enough"...you should know everyone well enough by then, have your parents send out some civvies and have your coach hold onto them until the night after rec (trust me, you don't want to be the one person that is still in PC gear while everyone else is chilling in civvies and playing xbox after rec....yes that happened to me  )

I may be wrong, but after Beast I don't think they really care if you have civvies in your room, but you're just not allowed to wear them. I know my son had a lot of different civvies outfits and when I met up with him at the TCU game, I'd brought him some more (and we did at PW as well). Some of that may be because in D&B they were sometimes allowed to wear civvies on trips (in Las Vegas, etc.). And I know for ski club they were allowed to ski in civvies and when they rented hotels/condos, etc. while on the ski trips they certainly wore civvies the entire time. And I know he had it all in his overhead during the year and no one cared. After recognition the upperclass had neatly folded them all for the display on his bed (I guess to change right into that evening! :thumb: ). I also know a lot of people wore them at their sponsors' houses (but obviously not if they went into COS itself with the sponsor) so that would be a place to leave the civvies once you get them back after Beast.

I wouldn't bet on this; it is really squad dependent (like many other things at USAFA). In my squad, we were warned that we could NOT have ANY civies in our rooms. If we had civies for club activities, skiing, etc we had to keep them in our coach's room or find another place for them. My whole squad got extra training because they found one person's I-day clothes in his drawer during an inspection.

That is definitely not the norm and I would not recommend keeping any civilian clothes, with the exception of ski/snowboard gear, in your room.

Okay, guess I keep forgetting how squadron specific USAFA is compared to WP! And his may have been because of D&B primarily as well but I knew he'd asked us to bring some for PW and again when I saw him in late October and that he had it in his room. Sorry about the mis-information!

Yep, squad specific. There are a few standards though. Ski clothing is OK. Specific athletic clothing is OK (i.e. some of the competitive cyclists have specific clothing).

As always, if you are doing something that is an exception, be prepared to explain and/or cite why you get the exception. (Hint: there are always AFIs, MFRs, and the CSP...if you are being reasonable, some document will support you)

Do you feel significantly fitter after life at USAFA?
I know it's a weird question, but I'm just wondering how significant the athletic environment and the elevation imposes on the body.

sg2019: my cadets always remind themselves: it is a privilege to dine in Mitchell Hall. Just keep telling yourself that.

I know this sounds stupid, but what about backpacks? I'm trying to fit everything I need for BCT into a backpack, and I'm wondering what the specs are. I really need a new one anyway so do we get issued backpacks or should I go ahead and buy a black one (ie North Face or Jansport)?

you will be issued one

Back Pack

Yes, you will get a sturdy backpack. However, "backpack" is a misnomer because you will have to carry it in your left hand until recognition.

Till recognition you may wish to call it a hand bag:shake: First year Chem. classes will give that left arm some nice definition.
