Questions Thread

If it says that you should not receive a tatoo prior to R-day, I would take it as you should not go and get one prior to R-day. Just saying.

You can also look at it like this. Part of the DoDMERB exam for qualification was to see if you had any disqualifying tatoos/piercings. Getting one after you have been deemed qualified is kinda like going behind their back and hoping it'll turn out alright come R-day when you get your final medical clearance

 buff81 do you know if this applies to 2014? I know guys who have or are planning to get more tattoos now

Sorry Chockstock- but I don't know.
I don't have the Instructions for Candidates Offered Admission for the Class of 2014.

I don't have the Instructions for Candidates Offered Admission for the Class of 2014.

This is from the policy for the Class of 2014:

TATTOO POLICY
In accordance with Army Regulation
670-1, any tattoo or brand anywhere on
the head or face is prohibited except for
permanent makeup. Tattoos that are not
extremist, indecent, sexist or racist are
allowed on the hands and neck. Tattoos or
brands that are extremist, indecent, sexist,
or racist are prohibited, regardless of location
on the body, as they are prejudicial to
good order and discipline within units.
Once accepted for admission to the
Academy, candidates are encouraged to
remove brands or tattoos which fall into the
prohibited categories above. Additionally,
candidates should not receive additional
tattoos or brands prior to R-Day. On R-Day
cadet candidates will agree to receive no
additional body modifi cations, such as tattoos,
brands or body piercings while attending
the academy and will have all tattoos,
brands, and body piercings inspected for
compliance with stated standards.

Or the way I see it, you have to live your whole life with that ink. Is that flaming dragon or [insert tattoo here] still going to be cool when you're 60 and starting to wrinkle..?

I had a lot of great ideas at 19 that don't seem so great at 29.

When my oldest was 18, he did an exchange year abroad. I found out that he planned to get a tattoo while there. I reminded him of house rules (he/she who doles out the cash makes the rules), and the tattoo never happened. Now that he's 23, he is very glad he is not sporting a pirate ship under full sail. Very rarely do tastes remain the same for the life of a tattoo. I wonder how many of my friends who thought it was "cute" to get a "tramp stamp" for their 40th birthday still think it's cute as 50 approaches? Ugh...wait on the tattoos!

Questions about Academics and Cadet Life

A few questions:

• I dislike running on treadmills and ellipticals. Are cadets allowed to go on a run together outside in the afternoon? How far are we allowed to run to on campus before we reach the designated "boundaries"?
• Validating classes: Hypothetical situation: If you get a headache during the Validation tests and your performance is impaired because of it, causing you to be placed into a class level lower than you expected to be in, but you end up doing exceptionally well in that class when the school year starts, can you talk to the teachers and the administration to move up a level?
○ I heard that plebes cannot validate out of chemistry (such as taking physics in your plebe year). Is this true?
• What is the orchestra like at West Point? What's the time commitment? How many years of experience do cadets have, or is there somewhat of a wide range of experience? Do cadets need to audition, and if so, is it difficult to get into the orchestra? I played the violin in middle school but not in high school because I wanted to try visual art for a change. Nevertheless, I still miss playing a musical instrument and I hope I will have a chance to play either the piano or the violin in college, whether if it's just for fun or with a group.

Question too:

Can cadets use the facilities such as the gym, or weight room in afternoons or do you have to be on a team to use it?

1) You will be able to run in a fairly large area. The longest one I have been on has been a 14 mile run (roundtrip). You will find the rules here will not impair your running needs.
2) Certain classes have resectioning in which they switch you to a different instructor half way through the semester and allow you to move up to an advanced class based on your performance. Most classes are not like this though so I would just try to do well on the tests during Beast.
3) Many Plebes validate out of Chemistry. They usually end up taking their foreign language instead.
4) I will let someone who knows more about this answer this one.

Anyone can use the gym as long as it is not during Evening Study Period. while you are a Plebe.

I dont think theres a fullblown orchestra here...I know there is a strings club that plays string instruments so you could join that if you play the violin

So...Plebes can't take Physics instead of Chemistry?

The reason I'm asking this is that I have taken an advanced chemistry class and an Organic chemistry class, as well as the Chem AP test, in high school and I'm not so pumped for another round of chemistry so soon.

Most plebes who validate are placed in their foreign language. However, physics is also an option, and the people at add/drop are very approachable for scheduling help in such matters.

Army Strings is a small chamber orchestra that practices one night per week.

A little off topic, but I'm 6'0" and weigh 210 pounds, but I play three Varsity sports for my school, exercise regularly, and I've passed a tape test requested by my regional admissions director. Any suggestions on how or if I should worry about loosing weight over the next several months?

TONS of people here have to be tape tested due to muscle weight. So long as you pass the tape test and the weight is due to muscle, don't try to lose muscle mass. Most people lose weight over CBT, especially guys who are used to eating more.

Classes

I understand that you won't be able to speak from personal experience, but what are the differences between Advanced Chemistry and General Chemistry, and Advanced and regular English classes for Plebe year?

The main difference between advanced and general chem is that advanced chemistry does "enrichment"s which are out of class experiences to supplement our lessons. We went to the nuclear power plant the other day, which was cool. This means we spend less class time on the subjects so we ca make time for these. Also, general chem does not do formal lab reports or problem sets like advanced chem does. We take all the same WPRs, though, so the tested material is not harder.

Advanced English means you validate composition and go straight to literature with other plebes who validated comp. Adv Lit is more conversational based than regular lit; honestly, though, like most English classes that is 100% based on your teacher.
