I have a question dealing with the process of choosing an area of specialty, once you near the end of your final year. From what I understand from my previous knowledge, assignments and choices go out, based upon class ranking. Now the two specialties I'm most dead-set on (gives me a goal) would be first Armor, then Artillery. About how quickly would those two be given out? Does it vary from class to class, or are there general trends with how quickly assignments fill up?
It varies from class to class. Those branches aren't generally competitive though so you're lucky.
Armored went out at 701 out of those who didn't offer additional service and at 832 for those who offered 3 more years of active duty. Field Artillery went out at 913 for those who didn't offer additional service and at 1020 for those who did. Those class ranks were out of 1039.
1. Where do you get this information?
2. Where do you come up with your questions?
3. Have you read books on USMA?
4. Have you received an appointment yet?
5. At Christmas, do you try to figure out everything ahead of time so you have no surprises at all?
Another question which came to me.. I've been playing the piano for 11 years so far, and practice daily for around an hour's time, usually more. Now I know that if I was to go to WP, that wouldn't be possible to have happen on a daily occurrence. But is there a policy on such things, such as having a keyboard? (since I obviously can't bring a legit piano with me, hah) Or is there a standard band/music club, besides the marching band? (Since piano isn't in a marching band)
There is a piano at the library you can go and use at your leisure (even daily if you find the time). It's in a nice room with a glass wall facing the hudson.
Thank you AF, for answering my few questions. I greatly appreciate you taking time to clearing them up for me.
Do you decide your major at the end of your plebe year?
While we're on the topic of majors here. Maybe we can hit two birds with one stone.
How difficult is it to double major at USMA? Maybe like History and Spanish or something like that. I'd prefer an engineering/history double major, but I'm assuming that engineering is hard enough and time consuming as it is. Also, is studying abroad usually only open to those with a language major?
