Questions Thread

Well I would imagine a lot of people have similiar questions. So they could just look through this thread and find their question answered.

I've found that there have been many good questions and answers in this thread as well as in past threads that have been written over the past several years.

The search function has been quite helpful, too, to address specific topics. Yes, there is quite a lot of good info to wade thru - whether in one large thread, or in individual question threads.

Alas a forum is not a great way to organize an FAQ.

I have a question dealing with the process of choosing an area of specialty, once you near the end of your final year. From what I understand from my previous knowledge, assignments and choices go out, based upon class ranking. Now the two specialties I'm most dead-set on (gives me a goal) would be first Armor, then Artillery. About how quickly would those two be given out? Does it vary from class to class, or are there general trends with how quickly assignments fill up?

It varies from class to class. Those branches aren't generally competitive though so you're lucky. :thumb:

Armored went out at 701 out of those who didn't offer additional service and at 832 for those who offered 3 more years of active duty. Field Artillery went out at 913 for those who didn't offer additional service and at 1020 for those who did. Those class ranks were out of 1039.

That news (and odds) are absolutely wonderful to hear!! Wow! I've always wanted to be an Armor/Cavalry officer for as long as I can remember. =] Thank you AF!

Aviation is really amazing, with rotary-wing aircraft....but heights simply terrify me. I can get over it for short times and if I don't focus on them, but if I was flying a helo for extended periods of time...let's just say I might get psyched out after a while, haha.

I might spend the next four years of my life there. Those four years might change my LIFE. I think its important that I know what I'm getting myself into. No, lol, I dont want to know everything haha. But I've come to rely on these forums a lot...sometimes I have nowhere to turn to :frown:. My parents cant help because they know very little about military life. And my MALO is kind of a loser who isn't really helpful. I've wasted a looot of time just trying to contact him. I've talked to him just twice. He's NEVER THERE and has not ONCE returned any of the messages I left for him :unhappy:

But most of all, I ask questions that I honestly care about. I feel that they are IMPORTANT! I can honestly say that not one question I've asked is something I've just pulled out of my butt to annoy people. Yes, I do have a life. I don't sit at my desk thinking up curveballs to throw. And I definitely don't demand answers from anyone (salute to AF for even bothering to read my questions :D), so I don't mind if anyone dont want to answer some of my questions

If you do, thanks for understanding me!

1. Where do you get this information?
2. Where do you come up with your questions?
3. Have you read books on USMA?
4. Have you received an appointment yet?
5. At Christmas, do you try to figure out everything ahead of time so you have no surprises at all?

1. ???
2. Most of them are my own creation...some of them I get from my family who are as curious as I am about the academy
3. I honestly don't think most of the questions I ask are the kind that can be answered by books
4. Nope
5. Yes. I appreciate the sarcasm!

Another question which came to me.. I've been playing the piano for 11 years so far, and practice daily for around an hour's time, usually more. Now I know that if I was to go to WP, that wouldn't be possible to have happen on a daily occurrence. But is there a policy on such things, such as having a keyboard? (since I obviously can't bring a legit piano with me, hah) Or is there a standard band/music club, besides the marching band? (Since piano isn't in a marching band)

There is a piano at the library you can go and use at your leisure (even daily if you find the time). It's in a nice room with a glass wall facing the hudson. :thumb:

It really seems that all the little things which have some sort of meaning to me, are all taken care of at WP, in a good way.

It's little things like this (which don't make or break the desire to go there, of course. I was even willing to sacrifice them if need be) which would probably make the experience even all the better. SLS 2010 this June.... hopefully WP Class of 2015 next June! (Seems so far awayyy, haha)

Thank you AF, for answering my few questions. I greatly appreciate you taking time to clearing them up for me.

Do you decide your major at the end of your plebe year?

Oh ok. Thats just like regular colleges lol...plenty of time to decide :frown:

A friend told me that engineering is the toughest department at USMA. Is this true?

And I was soo confused when I read that USMA is classified as a liberal arts college on US News. How on earth is West Point a liberal arts college????

While we're on the topic of majors here. Maybe we can hit two birds with one stone.

How difficult is it to double major at USMA? Maybe like History and Spanish or something like that. I'd prefer an engineering/history double major, but I'm assuming that engineering is hard enough and time consuming as it is. Also, is studying abroad usually only open to those with a language major?

Ive heard that many double majors include foreign language because it has easier requirements. And study abroad isn't just language majors, a lot of opportunities aren't language based at all.

Made a few corrections. Just because TAPS is at 11:30 doesn't mean you can't go to sleep before then. If you finish your homework early you can go to sleep right after Dinner.

ESP is only mandatory for Plebes and Yearlings.
