Roller coaster I: Get Us (The Parents) Through Plebe Year - Class of ‘26 🎢

I searched previous threads, but unable to get a sense of what is Easter like on the yard for those without family in town or don't visit the sponsor family? I read about the religious services schedule and an egg hunt event (for neighborhood/staff children?). Do they have a nicer meal in Kings Hall? Anything else? Plebes can now take town liberty on Sundays so perhaps there are some things to do in DTA.

First holiday away... this is the new norm in a long road ahead,

Easter is not a federal govt holiday, but a religious holiday. I suspect it’s normal weekend meal availability. We are having a mix of a few sponsor mids and 2 sponsor alumni and spouses for a midday meal on Sunday. There are religious services and activities for those who celebrate Easter. Sundays in the spring are a beautiful time to be in Annapolis, and local restaurants often offer an Easter brunch.

Son said they are getting extended EOL (end of liberty) on Sunday. Usually they turn into pumpkins at 1800 on Sunday, but when in leave status, it is 2000. My guess? Two hours extra Sunday of liberty.

My kid is going to hang with his GF and old shipmates from his NROTC unit at UMBC, about 30 - 40 minutes from USNA. We're going to my mother-in-law's place, so it would be tough to get him back in time.

I don’t remember there being anything special outside the Easter Services and dinner. We used to have mandatory Sunday dinners so I remember there being a nice supper that night. Mostly my buddies and I would go to church and then meet up out in town for a brunch at a nice place. This how you start to develop your own traditions and adjust for when you hit the fleet. Life continues regardless of training and deployments. You make the best of them and find weird ways to celebrate. I have had some totally strange holidays that I will never forget.

Yes and yes to the holidays on active duty. Fun and memorable and innovative and adaptive.

Son went to Salisbury on Saturday with the marathon club and did his first half-marathon. He's run further than that on training days when I had his summer schedule back in high school, but this was by far the most he's run in about two years (at once). And his first "official" race of the distance.

He ...... finished. Not his best pace for sure, as he was really under-prepared for the run. But he had fun.

His squad went out for Korean BBQ the night before, which he enjoyed. Then he met my parents at their place in Annapolis for dinner on Saturday.

Almost a "normal" weekend!

I'm a '24 mom, but looking forward to the parade. DD is flying out to hang with me while I dog sit in Annapolis (cool, gig, right?) and she hasn't seen a noon formation so we have that and the parade on the calendar for the 14th.

I'll wave at all the '26 plebes for y'all.

12 weeks are almost over. Son has a Chem II test, and an essay for English left.

His words?

"I will not be going SWO." :biglaugh:

(He bombed his Seamanship exam - but still has a mid-B in the class, he said).
I think I learn more from your son than mine! Love that you have the information! I'm hoping things go well. Sometimes no news is good news.

He actually reaches out to us for things like exams to let us know how it's going as well as some general correspondence. I ping him every now and then when I see/hear things from the forum that he hasn't talked about to get the scuttlebutt. ;)

We aren't going to go down for the croquet match, but we're going to have to see him in some capacity as the shades he ordered that are supposed to be part of his caddie "uniform" are sitting at the house!

So I just had that El Dorado call from DS (they are precious and really rare ;)☎️:yay: and he said that on Monday he will have the PCB so will be studying on Easter. I was like, what is that? He said Plebe Competency Exam. Is that a regular ProKnow or different? He is also going to be doing some 18 hour Marine practice type thing on Saturday that sounds tough to me but he is looking forward to. :muscles2: Thanks!

Okay, here’s one for you. Aviation Physiology. They have to sign up for a day. They get up at 0 dark 30 to drive 2 hours for a full day of…. what? Rumor is a 100 yard swim in a jump suit. That’s the only questionable detail I got from her. Any insight?

Could be related to summer training. If they are going to be in a plane, on a ship, or near water, they have to pass some tests related to exfiltrating a downed aircraft or ship. In full uniform and boots. With tons of specialized medical and rescue staff on hand.

Don’t hold me to it. I could be wrong. But I know my DS did this post plebe year prior to his being assigned trainings over the upcoming summer.

Son is signed up for his Aviation Physiology thing on Friday. Trip down to NAS Pax River for training from 0500 - 1500. He said it was for summer stuff.

Doesn't know when his PCB will be, but it is sometime this week.
