Roller coaster I: Get You (The Parents) Through Plebe Year - Class of ‘27 🎢

Now that Plebe summer is over, got a call from DD last night about not being able to log in, how to set up her IPad to the network, anxiety of where her classes are, etc. I.E, normal first day college freshman issues. Her first period is free so I told her to go to Nimitz and ask one of the librarians to help her with the IT set up. Time figure stuff out on your own! What a shock from relying on your detailers for everything to now figuring stuff out on your own.
There has to be one or two geek companymates that can help her out. Profs understand that plebes might be late to class initially because of the newness of it all. She'll get where she needs to be pretty quickly as she settles into the routine. Then she'll start all over again one day again. It took me some time to find my stateroom and other areas of the ship. Same feeling, this time with first day LTJG issues. Encourage her to hit the books hard right off the bat. Good luck to her and the rest of '27. Beat Notre Dame.

The college freshmen I teach say that time management is the hardest thing they have to learn. No standard school schedule, no teachers and coaches and parents keeping them on track, a lot of distractions to pull them from higher priorities.

Now add all the obligations at an SA — academic, athletic, military — without the same watchful eye of the detailers. Add the 3000 upperclassmen, who aren’t always looking to instruct. It can make for a very challenging time.

Don’t worry I graduated many moons ago and I still have dreams about not knowing where my classes are. Apparently I am not the only grad who has these. 😂
My nightmare was showing to class in the wrong uniform forgetting I had PE after a class. To top it off, I needed a grease uniform on inspection day after that 4th period PE class. I did not like Thursdays.

Not unique to USNA. I have this dream when stressed apparently. Or my teeth fall out 😬

Ha! So true. I saw this post on the USNA 27 BLB Page. Made me giggle. Too close to home!
We caught rare glimpse of DS ('25) during PS but were not sure it was him as the person in photo had a large scrap/wound on chin. We finally determined it had to be DS and were wondering how he got the wound. I figured he tripped up the ladderway (DS was not very coordinated). Secretly I hoped that he earned while battling another company in combatives and that the other kid looked worse :).

We did confirm later it was our DS and the wound was a from his razor. He got in a hurry to shave, was not used to manual razor and got a little too aggressive. He reported on time for formation but was bleeding and had a flap of loose skin on his chin. After stemming the blood, his Detailer gave him a lesson in speed versus efficiency. We still laugh at this story today.

This happens a lot the first few weeks if Plebe Summer. Young men who aren’t used to shaving daily, aren’t used to manual razor and being in a huge hurry. Always 1-2 Plebes bleeding from their faces during morning formation.

2027 Plebe Parents,
It's the Home Football opener this Saturday afternoon!! I'm not sure how well the info gets to the Plebes...
If you chat with your Plebe let them know to stop by the NJ & South Eastern PA Parent Clubs tailgates after the game for FREE Food at NJ & Desserts 🍰🍪🍮at the SEPA tent 😀😋 All MIDS are welcome and fed!

We'll be right off Taylor Ave near where they enter the stadium for the 'March-On'. I'll be helping at the SEPA tent as soon as Blue & Gold ends, should be a great day. Looking forward to catching up with my MID.

Alumnus plug for this tent. No matter where you are from, you got warm food, warm greetings, and a place to sit and unwind after either a close game or a one-sided blowout.

Parents worst nightmare! Found out in a letter over a week after our DS was in swim training and couldn't hold his breath or catch his breath and was experiencing chest pain. He was sent to medical where they did an EKG and it came back abnormal. They are making him see a cardiologist, and are requiring an echocardiogram, he will also wear a monitor before he can be cleared. As a parent it is the most horrible feeling in the world to be cutoff while your child is going through this scary situation. Unable to ask questions or have access to all the information. His appointment with the cardiologist is not until July 31st. So not only is he concerned about his health he has the stress of missing everything and being sidelined. He is worried about not being in shape for the final summer test. August 6th cannot come fast enough, never have I ever wished summer away, but this summer is much different! DS is maintaining a positive attitude and doing what he can to support his squad and company.
UPDATE:

So DS wore the heart monitor for a week and turned it in the Friday of PPW. A couple of weeks ago he got a call stating that he needed to go have a cardiac MRI. Last Thursday he went to Walter Reed and had the MRI (not a pleasant experience). The next day he got a call from the cardiologist stating that there had been an irregularity on the monitor and that is why they ordered the MRI. DS was told that they found cardiac edema and was given the diagnosis of "post covid Myocarditis". He had never tested positive for Covid when so many others did, his results were always negative. He is sidelined again for a month (his sport started Monday 😞). He is waiting for the trainer to get his records so they can see what he is allowed to do and set him up with some type of program. The cardiologist did tell him that this should go away in time and that it should NOT affect his commissioning. He has to have another MRI in 6 months.

I’m sorry for the out come. BUT also glad he is watched so closely, that it was discovered. And he is getting the Midas golden treatment of care. Really, he is. I hope that brings you comfort.

It’s not all about the sport. He may find he likes something else better, a less intense experience in an intramural (some are highly competitive!!). Another fortunate thing for him, is he can walk away from his sport, and not loose his ‘scholarship’ for his education. This is also different than *regular college*.

Appreciate the update!!

Question about Alpha Inspection. Why do they need to use a floor stripper? To remove wax from their floor? Just curious. I am unsure if my plebe and roommates passed their Alpha Inspection today. Just curious, how often does alpha inspection happen?

Yes, it’s to remove the wax build up, grime and dirt. They do alpha inspections brigade wide 1-2 times a semester. Companies may add to them if rooms are not being to standards. I would surprised if a Plebe fails. They usually have better rooms than most upperclassman. But they also get inspected much closer.

AH floor stripper. In Basic the guys doing the latrine got the idea that they should wax the tile floor. It did look good. When the Lt. stepped in he grabbed for the door jamb. Lt. to the accompanying NCO: THEY WAXED THE FLOOR. NCO: It looks good. Lt: But THEY WAXED THE TILE FLOOR. NCO: But it does look good. Break out the floor stripper:)

Maybe you can't take a huge sigh of relief yet - but I take that as pretty positive news - especially about commissioning. Sidelined in his sport might be a bummer, but commissioning is the goal, after all. :)

Hi everyone,
plebe mom here!
I have been looking through the academic calendars on the USNA web site, and I was wondering if anyone can explain to me what is ACADEMIC RESERVE?
I'm learning something new every day. ;)
