Its about fuel and always been about fuel. We have no business being involved.

Look at the history between ukraine and russia over fuel.

Report by Alexey Miller at Russian President Vladimir Putin's meeting on performance in autumn/winter heating season

December 29, 2021
Dear Mr. President,

It is the number one objective for Gazprom to ensure that Russian gas facilities operate successfully and confidently throughout the heating season. At the start of the period of withdrawal of gas from underground gas storage facilities, our working gas inventories totaled 72,638 million cubic meters with a daily deliverability of 847.9 million cubic meters. Both the working gas reserves and the daily deliverability are at all-time highs for our country.

There has been a sharp drop in air temperatures across Russia since the second week of December. On December 23, the average temperature in all regions covered by the Unified Gas Supply System stood at minus 17 degrees Celsius, which is 9.3 degrees below the climate normal. All these days, the levels of gas supplies to domestic consumers and withdrawal from Russia's UGS facilities have been at their highest in a decade since 2012.

As usual, Gazprom has been providing reliable gas supplies to our consumers in Russia and abroad. We have been fulfilling all of our contractual export obligations under long-term bilateral contracts in accordance with requests.

As of today, a total of 12,360 million cubic meters of gas, or 17 per cent of the working gas reserves, has been withdrawn from Russia's UGS facilities. By now, the facilities are 83 per cent full. In November and December, Mr. President, the Company followed your instruction and injected its own gas into European UGS facilities. By the end of December, we will have injected 1 billion cubic meters of gas into these facilities.

Every day between December 21 and 25, European operators registered daily records for gas withdrawal from Europe's UGS facilities. Notably, they have a long history of observation. Today, Europe's facilities are depleted by 44 per cent. Germany's UGS facilities are depleted by 47 per cent.

It should be said that the reserves in Europe's facilities are 21 billion cubic meters below the level observed in the same period of last year. This is 28 per cent, or almost a third, less. It is a sizeable deficit of gas in UGS facilities, and it affects the European gas market significantly.

Gazprom has fulfilled all of its obligations under the contract for gas transit across Ukraine. The planned amount was 40 billion cubic meters of gas. By today, we have transited as much as 41.5 billion cubic meters through Ukraine.

On December 24, Ukraine entered the period of historically low gas reserves in its UGS facilities. Today, Ukraine's gas reserves are lower than 14 billion cubic meters. This is 10 billion below the level recorded at the end of last December.

Dear Mr. President,

At 12:58 pm Moscow time today, Gazprom finished filling the second string of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline with gas. Now, both the first and second strings of Nord Stream 2 are under working pressure and fully ready for operation.

The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline has a design capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year and is the longest offshore gas pipeline in the world. It is 1,234 kilometers long.

Dear Mr. President, the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is ready to go!

For what it's worth, I am pro NATO and anti-Putin. He is a dangerous menace and can't be trusted. We need to keep an open discourse with him and the government there, though. As for Ukraine, I have some Ukrainian friends who moved to the U.S. because it was awful there. They think we should support the Ukraine, because that's the right thing to do. I tend to agree with them, but it always starts with supplies (arms and ammunition) and then it moves to sending in "military advisors", and then a "small security force" and then what?

Having worked for our government however, I don't trust them. I think that's a sound outlook, because the guys who wrote the Constitution didn't trust the government either. I don't care on which side of the aisle they sit, they don't seem to be representing us like they are supposed to. They both eat their young if they think it will get them a little more power.

I think it is. Usually you can ignore the rest.

For the gentleman suggesting writing courses the yellow dog is a lab. I am not sure what the orange white dog is but I like to read her posts.

As for CatDog everyone knows cats and dogs living together leads to mass hysteria.

You should be able to discuss our own border without it being labeled politics. Yes, perhaps a new post would be better. But there are a whole lot of subjects that appear to be off the table for discussion these days.

Why did Russia take Crimea from Ukraine and why the response (or lack of)? What is different now?

If we did agree to certain things in exchange for certain countries giving up certain weapons two decades ago are we going to follow through? What are we required to do? What happens if we don't?

Why do we need to do it and not the Europeans?

Not sure I know the answers to these questions.
The orange white dog is Cheddar. He was a Pembroke Corgi. That was the picture of his graduation from puppy training. He belonged to our 25 year old daughter. I adored him and he loved me. He lived 2.5 years before cancer took him.
He was the best boy.

From what I understand taking back Ukraine is a matter of national pride for old mother Russia. And it also has been referred to as the ‘bread basket’ of Russia. It’s not just gas and petroleum. Or a harbor.
But that’s just my laymen’s understanding.

It was referred as such dating back to the 19th century. For a number of years I worked for a multinational grain trading firm whose French founding family pioneered the Black Sea Grain trade. A mere 30 year's of Soviet Agricultural policy turned the USSR from a grain exporter to a grain importer. From the late 70's to the middle 80's the USSR consistently imported 25-40 mil tonnes of grain (excluding oilseeds) per year depending on the crop size That represented about 15-25% of their total consumption. This year Ukraine and Russia will EXPORT 63 and 45 mil. tonnes of feed grains and wheat respectively. In both countries the grain trade is handled by private companies. Bottomline, from the standpoint of grain, Ukraine is of no more strategic value to Russia than the Canada is to the US.

Energy is an entirely different story. Since Ukraine has few energy resources and almost all of its Nat Gas comes from Russia on a concessionary basis, it is a cudgel that Russia is using to try and beat Ukraine into submission. It is also the focal point of corruption in the Ukrainian government.

Putin has stated he intends to bring the former Soviet Republics back together and recreate a Russian empire. Some of it may be chest thumping but hard to tell if he is crazy enough to do it, he appears to be a dangerous dictator.

Why is the Ukrainian President upset that the US and the Brits are saying that it looks like the Russians are getting ready to invade? Isn't that obvious?

Maybe because the Ukrainian President knows that the Russian troop mobilizations are just a form of Sabre Rattling and a method to test our current administration's foreign policy and those of our NATO allies?? Maybe because all this panic and talks of war actually puts the people of Ukraine in more unnecessary panic and actually works in Russia's favor to try and destabilize his country?

Ukraine has always had this fear of the Russians coming in and of course that grew when they annexed Crimea. That being said, this fear of an attack isn't necessarily a new thing. Of course there are more troops near Ukraine now but it actually isn't a major difference between what was there last year. Countries will always station more troops and Military Power near an area where there is tension or instability, like us stationing troops in South Korea, the Chinese increasing Missile Batteries in Fujian which is adjacent to Taiwan, then of course Russia putting troops near Ukraine.

Of course, Ukrainian should still stay alert but if I were the President of a country that has traditionally been the potential flashpoint between two super powers, I would't be happy if either side's media or politicians kept war mongering. Sometimes, it can help to turn off the TV, put the Remote down, and actually take time to read and learn about the situation's history and events. The media and businesses will try to exaggerate the situation and so it fits their narrative or their stocks go up (Defense Companies). I'm confident and hoping that this situation will de-escalate and become a highlight of 2022.

I choose to watch Parks & Recreation instead.
I was told that I remind several people of Ron Swanson and I have to say that after after season 3, I have decided that I am a little like him. It is simultaneously a compliment and an insult.

I don't understand your point. If I were the President of Ukraine and I didn't want the Russians to invade my Country, I would be screaming for the West to help my Country. It sure looks like Russian is getting ready to invade. I certainly hope that by the end of February, that Russia has not invaded and occupied Ukraine. We shall see.

The President of Ukraine receives Daily Briefs of Russian Military activity the second he wakes up. These are extremely detailed briefs from his Political and Military Advisor's who are no stranger to these types of situations. The President of Ukraine sees more than we do, so perhaps what he is seeing is not an imminent threat.

While we here in the United States, get most of our information from Mainstream Media, which is notorious for hyping many things in an attempt to fit their narrative. Not saying they shouldn't report this but I would figure the briefings that President of Ukraine receives are more detailed and less biased than what you get from Fox News, CNN, Yahoo, and etc.
