Service Selection

There is a formal dinner with the class (a lot like the 2 for 7 dinner) and then people change into their community t shirt and they head to Dahlgren for the celebration (a lot of provided alcohol, dancing and music). Profs who have been there a few years are usually pretty understanding when a lot of 1/C show up to class a little hungover or otherwise less bright-eyed and bushy-tailed than usual.
Thanks for rounding out the picture, @Usnavy2019. I do recall photos of DD and friends at the Dahlgren celebration, all donning apparel of their new community. The scene was festive. The smiles were widespread and broad. 😁

Then there are the photos from the next morning, with DD and friends still wearing the same stuff, now carrying coffee mugs and backpacks — presumably on the way to class, presumably a bit hungover. The smiles remained widespread and broad. 😁

My Firstie DS is really bumbed he can’t participate. He is 7 time zones away doing a semester at another country’s academy (only 3 mids there and he is the only Firstie). He knows his service assignment but he wants a t-shirt

He can secure a T-Shirt...think out of the box e-mail his Company Officer or SEL to secure one for him....better....how about a classmate in his community...

After dropping the kid off on Saturday morning for catching the bus to the Notre Dame game, I took my littlest dude to Naval Bagels. Overheard a group of Firtsies talking service selection. One was giving statistics saying he "heard" that 83% are getting their first choice.

Seems like a very specific number. Either he heard it from someone in the know, or it is the usual midshipman grapevine at work!

I heard something similar. And I also heard where it *allegedly* originated.

Soon we will know.

It’s a BWAG. Bancroft Wild-A$$ed Guess

I understand that OCS is the “valve” Navy can use to increase or decrease new JOs from year to year. But will Navy “rob” NROTC service assignments to make them available to commissioning USNA grads? I suppose the total numbers are not as set in stone as they seem but I am wondering if USNA grads are given preference over NROTC grads when it comes to service assignment.

If OCS selectees are assigned (guaranteed!) to their community before they ever enter officer training - a perk not afforded to Naval Academy midshipmen - I don't think it's too much to assign academy midshipmen to their first choice provided they are qualified.

I don't know if USNA grads are given preference over NROTC grads for service assignment - but, if not, they should. That's my point.

Finally talked to him in person (after over 2 months). Mids had to buy their t-shirts ahead of time (which he did) - most just don’t know what color it will be. He’s going to try to FaceTime in on Thursday but it will be the wee morning, he bunks with three commissioned officers, and he got yelled at in a foreign language for being too loud while streaming the Vikings game on Sunday (so he has been “warned”).

Can't believe your kid got in trouble for rooting for the Vikings. At they very least they would've taken pity on such a down trodden soul

It is possible that the 83% number could be accurate. When I went through the process, the 1/C had a Dant's Call the week prior to Service Assignment. He went through all of the statistics to include percentage breakouts of 1st choice, 2nd choice, 3rd choice, and 4th or lower. My year (Class of 2020) had an ~80% first choice selection rate. It was good to see the statistics, but I think it left a bit more anxiety since you started wondering if you were in the 20%.

I would do a parlay that the number is over 83% and my son is in the 17+%. ;)

The 83% is almost spot on. 82% of the great class of 2023 will receive their first choice, and 92.7% will receive their first or second choice.
Would be interested in your observations tomorrow about how many were really surprised or disappointed in their assigment. I think that's a better indicator than First Choice, Second Choices, etc. So many factors in play here , including how many put a particular selection as a first or second choice knowing that it was a longshot at best. There are limits on how many can be assigned to each billet, and I would hope (and expect) that USNA administration tries to manage expectations...

My son’s first choice had one slot. They got rid of the slot, so he expects he is getting his second choice. He texted me today. Later he called and said he didn’t get upset like he thought he would. He is already researching what he can do in his community.

Apparently after a few years he can look at UCT (if I heard him correctly).

Semper Gumby in healthy play.
