I feel a bit like an intruder jumping into this thread, but there are a couple of things I wanted to say to all of you before you depart on your various paths.
First, as both a BGO and a mod of this site for many years, this time of the year is heartbreaking for me, even though I don't have anyone dear to me "in the game." Too many "kids" and their parents get bad news -- a cruel numbers game where there are simply too many deserving people for too few spots.
Second, I know the parents on this thread must have terrific kids because of how you all have shown yourself during this difficult time. You all embody what USNA stands for -- staying together and supporting each other even when your child's dream didn't turn out as you'd hoped. It is inspiring and, if you've passed any of that along to your children as I'm sure you have -- they are better and stronger for it.
Third, from experience, encourage your children to embrace their plan B (as I know you will). There is always the immediate desire to reapply to USNA but whatever path your child is now embarked upon will be just as wonderful and, come next fall. he/she may well say, "USNA what?"
I had a candidate reapply several years ago and be appointed. This person really struggled with whether to accept the appointment. He/she was very happy at the civilian school, had made many friends, had succeeded wildly from an academic standpoint -- giving that up wasn't as easy as he/she had thought it would be when that TWE arrived the April prior. The person ultimately accepted the appointment and was very happy at USNA but along the way learned that Plan B was pretty darn terrific as well.
I do hope all of your children decide to serve their country -- through NROTC, OCS or another path.
Best of luck to those of you still waiting and those who are now started on a rich and rewarding journey!
