Those of Us Still Waiting

As tough as it is, please be patient. For example, admissions may be waiting for final approval of the slate before releasing it. That means a review Monday or even Tuesday. Yes, the waiting is tough, but if you're place on the wait pool it'll be even longer. Keep your plan B/C active and fingers crossed.

BTW, I teach at MMI, so if you have questions you can send them to me.

Thanks for your response. I've heard a lot of good things about MMI. Curious from your perspective, what should a student consider when deciding whether to self prep for USCGA at either MMI or a public or private college/univ? I've heard that MMI is an excellent source to prep, but not recommended for everyone.

From the academic side, since MMI is an accredited two-year college, all the courses are transferable to a bachelor's degree. The courses taught at MMI, besides the SAT/ACT prep courses, are not designed for prep but for university level work. On the leadership side, every student at MMI is a member of the corps of cadets, so military regimen and leadership opportunities translate directly to the academy life. The final point is that MMI is a prep school for CGAS, so we have personal contact with many people in the admissions department, including having the director of admissions visit MMI at least twice per year.

Ok, sales pitch done. Can a reapplicant get in without going to a dedicated prep school? Yes, they can. Demonstrating success in university level courses is a definate plus that admissions looks at, as well as showing dedication for reapplying. Plus, the farther they go through the four year program, alternative programs come into play. Success at the local community college is good as well, as long as the courses parallel the course work at the academy. That means taking composition, one or two lab based sciences, and the highest level math they qualify for.

Dedicated prep schools can and do improve academic skills, and do an excellent job at preparing a student for the academy. Check, though, that the courses give college credit, or offer a way to get college credit.

Best of luck to all.

Everyone who is in this thread check your spam folder if you havent heard about a DoDMERB examination:The email could possibly come from either info@concorde2000.com or dodservice@concorde2000.com
and actually search it while your in your spam folder as DoDMERB or the emails provided above. I am letting you know because I first got an email back in Feb but my spam box had deleted it and I never saw it. Then there was a follow up email from them March 12 that if I had not been trying to actively look for it today I would have never saw it. Full disclaimer though, you may or may not have gotten an email. I am just trying to share my experience to help others.

Anyone know if DS will get a phone call no matter the decision? or if it is a no or waiting list will it be a letter or update in portal?

My DS was accepted into all the university’s he applied for here as plan B. But he was thinking of going the JuCo route then reapplying to USCGA rather than investing a lot of time and money into an expensive university (bless this kid) then hopefully being accepted next year. He was EA deferred RA. How do we find out what classes are the best for him to reflect the academy’s? So interested in speaking with you!

Contact the AO and see if they'll discuss the specifics of his application. They may recommend more SAT prep, for example. As far as courses, I'd recommend Composition, General Chemistry, and Math, either precalculus or calculus based on his placement by the school. Try to take a full load, but remember that the GPA is paramount.

For all of those on the still waiting thread, did anyone or everyone do their medical with Dodmerd?

We did last year in anticipation of possible going the USNA route. But decided on CGA.
