Christcorp is correct: one was initially a recruited fencer after he lost to a USAFA fencer at the Nationals, 15-11 (They were tied at 11-11 for a LONG time, and the USAFA coach came over to his fencer, whispered an instruction, and my little high schooler was whipped, then, but the coach liked his chutzpah). Twins had almost identical scores in everything, including fencing. One was later to apply and was also blue-chipped, but at a late date. He did not go on the recruiting trip, and didn't find out till later, after his brother received an LOA in October, 2011.
Both homeschooled, they had 45+ credits from local 4 year university, 4.0 there too (subjects harder to homeschool: Physics & Chemistry w Lab for example).
There had been only one kid from our district (the smallest by population in PA) go to any US Service Academy, a man who graduated in 1979 and was later killed in flight. When my boys were set to leave for USAFA, this man's mother baked a cake for them, and prayed for them every single day. She still asks about them (she's 92 now).
