USAFA Presidential Appointment

I would hazard a guess and say NONE has been announced.

My DD received a call from the admission counselor to let him know that he's received presidential nomination somtime in Aug '16. Do they usually inform the candidates then if they're 1/100?

Yes they are notified if they are appointed. They are also notified via their portal if they get a nomination.

Are you misunderstanding that although only 100 can be appointed via Presidential, but the Presidential slate is unlimited. They typically have upwards of 500 nomineess on the Presidential slate.

To tack onto Steve's post. Many Presidential nominees will not find out until March like the MoC candidates. Just because you have that nomination do not assume they will charge them any faster than they do the MoC slate. There will be some that get an early appointment because the board knows from historical data what the WCS looks like and that candidate without a doubt would be high enough to get an appointment. Think of it like their score is so high that they were the top 5% of last yrs scores. Thus, even if the pool is insanely larger or more competitive than last year it would be doubtful that they would fall from being #5 if on last years slate(charged) to number 101 this year.

Mike's DS got his apptmt in Nov. (late) as a Presidential nom. with no LOA. He was about one of the 1st of that yr group to get an apptmt., be it Pres. or MoC. The earliest ones that come out are usually LOAs, and that is where the water gets muddy. If a candidate has an LOA with a Presidential, than they will get an apptmt. However, it does not = being charged which can mean that none have been charged.

USAFA Class of 2021 Appointments:

1. flyingbadger21/Self /No LOA /Appt. Oct. 30, 2016 /WI- POTUS/Presidential Nomination
2. padre101/DS/No LOA/Appt. Oct. 30 2016/VA - POTUS/Presidential Nomination

These were just listed a couple days ago. It looks like a few appointments have trickled out already (with Presidential Noms).

This gets discussed and is a technical aspect (which means it doesn't really matter as long as you are offered an appointment) - the appointee rarely knows how they are slotted relative to whose appointment they are filling. For example, 3 cadets could all have been nominated by Senator McCain, but they won't necessarily know if/who will count against McCain's allotment of appointments or against another set of slots.

My DS is waiting patiently for appointment from USAFA. USAFA has been his first choice. In the meantime, since he swims for the high school varsity team, College coaches havebeen following him and email him about joing their swim team. What would be my DS best response to these coaches?

And as I and others have mentioned in the past; just because you INITIALLY receive an appointment and it says "Presidential" or maybe even a congressman's MOC nomination; that doesn't mean it will stay that way. The same individual could also have a MOC nomination, and later on, if the academy wants a particular person to receive an appointment, and all they have is a presidential, they may take the appointment using the presidential away from you, and give it to the other person, and readjust yours to USE the Congressional nomination.

To clarify. If you have an appointment, you aren't going to LOSE IT. Simply saying that the NOMINATION used for that appointment, can change later on to one of your OTHER nominations. "If you have other nominations". If you only have 1 nomination, and you get an appointment, obviously that nomination is the one they MUST USE. But the others, they can move them around a little to maximize the most qualified candidates.

Always have back up plans!

NCAA has strict rules concerning communications between the student-athlete & coach. As I recall, the time of year & who initiates the conversation are just 2 conditions. Improper communications can result in penalties/loss of scholarship offer so I recommend you go to the NCAA website so as to be completely informed. Also keep in mind that it is not a 4-year scholarship, but 4-1 year scholarships. It can be renewed every year, or not.

He can communicate per NCAA guidelines to coaches. NCAA website has those rules. In the meantime I would recommend you have your DS register for the NCAA Clearinghouse if he has not yet. Coaches asking him to swim is one thing. Scholarships are another and that is a rather lengthy discussion while waiting on an appointment. He should have back up plans. So if usafa doesn't happen, what does his future look like? He needs to explore that also.
