USNA Class of 2027 Waitlist: Team Hopeful

It is a daughter, sorry I said DS in last post accidentally. No offers for prep school or NAPS. We had been concerned the offer hadn't come starting in February and kept being reassured not to worry. Admissions had already reviewed her stuff and it was just taking a while cause they were busy. I think she has had so much stress/pain over the last couple of months due to this that it is now almost a relief just to know. The 6 weeks on waitlist delivered the final blow before finishing it off. I only write this as a cautionary tale to others. If we did it again I would try to figure out how to have her keep other coaches in the wings some how. Not sure how. For now, she is done here. Though I still see a small flame in there flickering. We shall see what the future brings. Having walked away from her other top schools, she doesn't want to settle and I think is going to take a gap year. Watching her have to navigate all the other seniors thrilled with their next stage while she is so unsure of her future is completely heartbreaking. As one family friend said to her, this bright shiny new chip on her shoulder will take her far.
We have a family friend who went through a similar situation, though not with USNA. Coach at her dream school totally misled her and she ended up in the same place. Did the gap year and got into an Ivy the next year. Lots of short term drama/pain, but in the end she was very happy with the result and experience. Good luck to you and your daughter as you work through this.

It is a cautionary tale. I worked with a candidate years ago where the situation was even worse. AFTER she received a TWE, the coach still told her that she was "waitlisted." I actually had to break it to her that a TWE is final. I was livid and called USNA Admissions complaining about coaches giving false hope. Got a lot of hemming and hawing. The good news is that this candidate went to another school (where she actually wasn't able to continue her sport), excelled, reapplied to USNA, was appointed and ultimately graduated in the top 50 in her class.

As I said earlier, I think the USNA coaches really believe / hope it will work out. But they aren't in Admissions and (outside of the revenue sports) don't have as much pull with Admissions as they'd like (or probably as they'd have in many civilian schools).

I was never even close to being a recruited athlete, let alone a blue-chip, so I don't pretend to understand all the nuances of committing and handling coaches, etc. I would say to tread carefully if you don't have an LOA by end of December. For MOST blue-chip candidates w/o an LOA, it still all works out, but not for all. Even if you're the second coming of Roger Staubach, make sure you have strong Plan Bs in place.

For the quoted poster . . . if DD really wants USNA, a gap year is unlikely to help her and may hurt her. As someone else posted, it may be the perfect thing for a civilian school.

I have been following this year’s waitlist thread since my DD was in the same position last year and I truly was empathetic for those who were placed on waitlist. I am so very sorry to hear about this , how brutally unfair to your DD and such unnecessary stress for the entire family. I sincerely wish your DD the best in the future. I know the shock and sadness is very fresh , but maybe she might consider a year in College instead of a gap year. Sending up a prayer for your DD (And her parents ).

For those who did get an email asking if you would like to stay on the waitlist have you heard anything?

I got FQO today!! I received the email a week back stating Co27 was full. I responded with strong desire to remain on WL. Today at 1pm GMT I received the email!!
Congrats. What a great, late surprise!

Thank you for sharing your daughter's story and your insight. I am really hoping she can navigate these next weeks and find the right place for the fall, to include a gap year working out and either re-applying or getting recruited elsewhere. Take care and give her a hug for me. I know this isn't easy.

Such as crushing story. I am so sorry.

This entire process is cruel.

They are everywhere! Raining spam. Copies an existing post and adds the suspect link. I reported a few more, then realized there is a boatload.

Mods, break out the weed whacker!

Haven't been on here in about 3 weeks since I was turned down. I just checked my grades from my second semester of college for the first time today over a month since they were completed (I was nervous). good news is, I did a lot better than I expected. currently sitting at a 3.33 cumulative gpa (with one C, in calc 2) as an aerospace engineer in NROTC with 32 hours completed. I told myself I wouldn't, but this has kind of motivated me to maybe try again. Thoughts?

YES!!

That’s if you want it, go for it. You were a waitlister, correct? That means you were close. Of course next year is a whole different slate of competitors, but you have a year of college to add to your resume. And did respectfully, in a tough major.

The only way you will get in, is to apply. And only you know if you want it bad enough to try again. But USNA loves reapplicants!

If the Academy is what you want, go for it. Keep in mind though, at the end of the year you will be a rising Junior with 2 years in your unit. That may sway your decision.

In the meantime, continue to be a good shipmate, stay focused on outstanding grades, get those leadership billets, and see if you can secure a PNS recommendation (NROTC nom).
