USNA Class of 2028 Waiting and Speculating

The portal is the main form of communication for USNA candidates. Once someone is CPR, they generally will not expect to hear anything until an offer/decision is made. So, it could be (clarification - will more than likely be) months with no updates.

DS status changed to CPR this morning! Now to get those nomination packets in, and. . . wait. Good luck to all the candidates!
Awesome! My DS has his interview tomorrow and that will finish his application. Good luck!!

Seeing the C/O 2028 thread already up just makes me more nervous....

My whole package is in, except for DoDMERB and my BGO interview (all of that's scheduled for next week), and my application is still marked as incomplete. I have to get my nomination situation fixed; my Representative's site is still broken and I'll need to follow up with his office and figure things out.

Wishing all the other applicants on here the best of luck!

DS has everything completed, which is, I'm guessing, why he's now CPR. He'll stay there for a very long time, but he can now stop checking to be sure everything's been received and processed. It's no indication one way or the other what his chances may be.

If that makes you feel any better. my DS application has been finished since mid-August, minus the nomination. It is still marked as “incomplete”. I am not sure what to do about it as USNA refers to that as a number of internal steps that they need to complete.

would you happen to know what triggered the application to go into CPR state?

I'm sorry, but I have no idea how anything in admissions anywhere works! He had some issues this summer with the portal, like a lot of folks I think, but his admissions counselor has been really helpful and responsive, and he's had most everything submitted for a while now (everything except the nomination). I think files are initially processed by/within each region?

Congrats to your son for getting this far! Mine changed sometime in the past 48 hours too. I try desperately not to check every day, but usually I fail. The one time I skip a day, of course something changes.

My main concern is that technical issues are preventing admissions from seeing all the applications that has been completed. The calls to USNA admissions range from them telling DS that number of items is missing to that they have everything. The lack of consistency in responses is a real concern.

I think DS said about a week ago his admissions counselor verified they could see everything, despite not having everything checked off on his portal. Today everything was checked off and CPR. I really think he's only been contacting his assigned admissions counselor; I don't really know for sure, but he's been back in school since early August, so been busy with that and other applications now.

Admissions can see what is submitted. Whether the user facing portal reflects that is another matter.

I had a candidate reach out to me yesterday concerned his submittal of his Math and English recommenders/evaluators email had not been accepted (on user side he had error). I was able to confirm for him that the requests had been sent. Once USNA receives the respondents evaluation I can confirm that for my candidate via the BGIS portal.

Unless the candidate qualifies for a nomination outside of MOC, it is not likely their file will be evaluated prior to the MOC nomination slates being received and that can run into February.

If the candidate doesn’t qualify for non MOC noms, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to hamper admissions with little stuff at this point in the cycle. It’s so early. Tech issues are real. And annoying. The staff will kick butt to screen and evaluate and upload what they need to. Yes it makes sense to trigger medical for potential remediation.

Admissions cares about each candidate file and evaluates them to a degree I couldn’t have fathomed prior to BGO training. Trust the process.

How can admissions evaluate someone’s file for the purpose of extending LOA if such file is “incomplete” due to technical reasons? Also when candidate submits everything earlier (which isn’t a simple task on itself) and what at the minimum demonstrates commitment on part of the candidate, wouldn’t that be sufficient motivation for the admissions to complete their part of the process (which didn’t have to exist on the first place) and clear applicants file of any technical glitches so that the file is ready to review by the board for whatever reason. Whether or not that candidate would issued an LOA and admission is a secondary step, but at the minimum admissions would demonstrate willingness to not hold back the candidate who already demonstrated an effort.

@mike1979 LOAs are often issued to candidates with certain completion requirements -- ie you don't need a complete status to be qualified for an LOA. However more items completed means better chance to get an LOA (the whole candidate scores are higher).

As @Heatherg21 said -- BGOs and admission office may see more accurate status -- and thus more likely LOAs won't be a problem as a result from applicants' portal inaccurate completion status

I don’t disagree with you. However, with the type of technical issues that we everyone is dealing the candidates are at disadvantage since the data doesn’t show up in where it needs to be. Hence creating an illusion of an incomplete application.

If USNA has not confirmed that it is being hampered in its evaluations and/or determining whether an application is complete regardless of the candidate facing portal problems, it may be an incorrect assumption that a candidate has been disadvantaged. In any event, if there are systemic IT issues, then presumably this is impacting all candidates and thus not really a disadvantage in the "competition" to an appointment. My view is that candidates (and parents) don't need to worry about things they cannot control. Candidates should make reasonable inquiries and correct deficiencies they can control. Worrying about LOAs is something of a fool's errand - don't get caught up in that game. Don't worry about "illusions" of an incomplete application. Candidates will be evaluated and an application that is completed this early in the cycle will be evaluated in a timely manner.

To you. But not to USNA staff. To your point, an ILLUSION isn’t REALITY.

Respectfully, your angst is aggravated bc you (idk about your son) have made it clear that if your son doesn’t receive an LOA, he is accepting ED at another institution. So you are gunning for an LOA. So you have a self-imposed earlier timeline you (idk about your son) must meet. Absolutely 100pct without question, that’s the wrong attitude here….putting everything on receipt of an LOA…as everyone here has tried to express.

NO EARLY submission does NOTHING to advance, advantage, or otherwise provide benefit or show commitment. It’s just. Plain. Doesn’t. Apps aren’t due until the end of the year. Early DOES potential trigger the DODMERB appointment (unless it doesn’t. One year, different criteria was used for triggering a DODMERB).

BGO’s just yesterday received an email (at least I did) from my Regional Director citing ongoing issues specifically with the candidate checklist. They suggest using a Chrome browser when accessing their application. And if the candidate has any concerns, to reach out to their admissions counselor for confirmation.

Every year, there has been some sort of glitch/challenge in the process. Last year it was DODMERB (which makes this pale in comparison!). It’s all part of the world we now live in, at least that’s how it’s been since I’ve been here.

If you didn’t have your ED decision to make for your son, perhaps this wouldn’t be as annoying to you. Idk. But April 15th is when he should expect to hear by. Not before. He CANNOT go for a LOA. And early submission doesn’t play into this process at all. This is is a bureaucracy, not the civilian world of efficiencies. Not making excuses, but this is reality.

If your son has received confirmation that USNA has everything, then USNA has everything. You simply aren’t seeing it as checked on your end. Or your son isn’t. Maybe CPR will pop up this week. That’s still not an LOA. Or does nothing for an LOA. Assume you (son) won’t receive on. And move forward however you (your son) needs to.

Honestly, this is a stressful endeavor. More so for some than others. Often, it’s advised to hop off the portal checking, and forums for a bit. Put it aside. And enjoy senior year. Can’t get those moments back!

Just to be clear again… a completed app is not required for an LOA. Admissions does not do first in, first to be reviewed. Even if a candidate makes it to CPR, it does not mean they will be reviewed or know their future. Prepare for 4/15, if an appointment arrives earlier (most hear Jan-Mar) or receives and LOA (still not an appt), then great news. A candidate will not know when they are reviewed. I had a candidate (water walker stats as well with first board offers for multiple ROTC and LOAs at other SAs) reviewed on one of the first boards and got his appointment in early-April (I am assuming he was one of the top appointments from the NWL). A candidate can remain CPR for 8+ months. Also there are two parts to all of this… the admissions review (essentially saying yes or no and scoring) and the Noms Committee that slates candidates for appointments. So getting reviewed is only one step. Yes, an LOA can occur at any point along this path.

I think you missing the point. I agree that the completed app is NOT a requirement for LOA. However, the app that clearly shows gaps due to technical reason and inconsistencies in the responses from the admission staff is what concerns mean. As I have stated earlier. Those inconsistencies range from "we don't have X, Y and Z" to "we have received everything". if they have received everything, then why not just look at the file, check it for completion and push it to the next group? This needed to be done anyways and DS would stop calling and emailing about status update. This would just make everyone's life so much easier. At least at this point the application would be in the hands of the admissions and not glitched out server and its technical support staff. All I am asking is for the admission to make an extra effort and not block the candidate with an earlier submitted application due to technical glitches.

May I ask, what IS the latest word form admissions? Have they stated they have everything? As you say?

If they do, what are you needing? If they have everything, then he IS in the system. Is that the piece you think isn’t happening?

I don’t think you will be satisfied unless you physically are present in the admissions building yourself. This is not, nor has it ever ben, a transparent process. Everything you are assuming hasn’t happened, perhaps already has.
