Think I have a scheduling conflict with it so I’ll need to plan that out!

Why so early? In NY our kids are still taking regents exams and my DS high school graduation IS on June 25th. If he gets an appt I'm sure he will be OK with missing graduation but it's unfortunate with the timing of events.

My son was inducted the day before his graduation last year in NY.

Another way to look at it is why NY schools go so late ? Used to be that school was out by Memorial Day. (And still pretty close where I live; I think its mostly East Schools that extend into the Summer)

It is because of the required antiquated Regents exams in NY State

Yeah why do NY schools graduate so late? In Tennessee everyone's usually out by mid-may.

Every year there are a few folks who miss h.s. graduation due to I-Day.

I-Day is typically on a Thursday at the end of June. My guess is that the early date is simply due to the vagaries of the calendar (just like Thanksgiving is sometimes "early" or "late" in November), depending on when the 4th Thursday falls (ditto with Labor Day).

It has to be scheduled so they get the mandatory plebe summer completed in time for the academic calendar to start. I doubt my kid would miss his HS graduation if it meant being at I Day. I might miss the photo op and speech but onward and upward.

NY (and NJ) traditionally don't start school until Labor Day and the New England States are close to that. I know that many other areas start in August, even early August and this is jsutdiferent.

FWIW: USNA use to start fall Semester after Labor Day as well. That went away when the Academic Calendar shifted to put exams before Christmas Leave as opposed to mid to late January as it was done up through the late 70's. With 1st Semester finals in January, the Second Semester started and ended later which is why it used to be called "June Week". My graduation/Commissioning was June 7th.

HS graduation is a big deal to a lot of kids. its their last hurrah with their classmates, and sometimes they are speaking at graduation. i feel bad for kids that will miss it to attend I Day, but thats the military for you. milestones will be missed, for all the years of active duty. My son is missing his only brothers HS graduation due to CORTRAMID commitment. nothing can be done.

Also, some NY school districts are off for February break (week of President’s Day) as well as some religious holidays that are not as commonly observed in other areas of the country. This also pushes out the calendar well into June.

H.S. graduation is a big deal at the time. For those for whom h.s. represents the culmination of their educational journey, it's a big deal forever. For those who go on to college, I think the memory fades quickly / is replaced.

It is unfortunate but, as those who have spent time in the military (and their relatives) know, this is part of being in the military. You miss out on stuff.

I was told some NY districts add days between last tests and graduation in case they run out of snow days and need the flexibility to add school days to meet minimum requirements by law.

Our schools used to start after Labor Day and end the third week of June. Parents complained. Now, school starts the week before Labor Day (although the kids only go 2.5 days) and ends the second full week in June. For us, the issue is teacher work days. For example, kids here had MLK JR day off. The next week they had two days off for teacher work days (after being back in school for only 3 weeks). It's a wonder they learn anything!

Meh, at the time it is. But I certainly hope no one looks back on it as the height of their life. Next week I am signing to allow my son to graduate HS a semester early, so this December. After spending a year abroad as an exchange student, he cannot stand American high school life any more. He knows what he is moving on to do and certainly does not need to spend another semester in HS to do it.

Every year there are SA attendees who miss their HS graduation. I would think the prospect of graduating from an SA four years later would outweigh any disappointment over missing a HS graduation!

I know in our district, if the calendar falls right, we can squeeze the 1st semester in before Christmas break. But, if not, they add fluff days and the 1st semester then ends MLK weekend. They dont want the kids coming back and taking final exams the first week. So, first week review, 2nd week exams, off for a 4-5 day weekend, and then start 2nd semester. So, one year we get in late May, next year 2nd week in June.
