Which on would you recommend Yale AFROTC or USAFA

Mbley,

Quick question. Have you asked her which is more important....commissioning or being a doctor?

The way she is talking now is she want to become a doctor long term in military or outside, but also want to do intelligence when she commission and later if she changes her mind and want to stay in military. She is fluent in Russian and I think she likes some options described to her if medical carrier do not pan out.

I would investigate AFROTC deeper now. I believe they also get a financial bump for certain languages. Have her talk to the CoC at Yale.
~ I don't know how it works...lump sum stipend or more money paid to the bursar. They (HQ AFROTC) have critical languages and Russian might be one of them
~~ Beware the AF can say if you go down this path, and if they say this is a critical manning issue, by accepting she might have to go whatever career filed they say.

I believe she can apply for a summer training experience.
~ AROTC posters like Jcleppe, Bull and Clarskson can tell you more about this. I think it is called GO.
~~ It is very popular among AROTC, but AFROTC cadets are eligible too.

From the gist I know of it, it is an immersion program in country (IE she may go to Russia) during the summer. They go overseas for a month or so as a cadet. They pick up the bill. There is an AFROTC cadet that applied this year. Unfortunately I can't remember which poster. You might want to a search GO or pm Bull for info.

I have never read anything, but positive experiences regarding this program. She will have to compete for it, but still it is an experience that can help in the long run when applying for Med school or if she goes Intel.

When you visit USAFA find out if they have a program like that. Just make sure she has investigated the ROTC program too.

Language pay (called the Foreign Language Skill Proficiency Bonus) is really temperamental- as an AS400 now, it's only been offered for three semesters for me and is going to be suspended after this semester. Often we'd get emails that it was being offered well after we had registered for classes. As it's been offered recently, it's a good deal though- a set amount per credit (starting around $100/credit I think) for language or culture classes, dependent on the critical status of the language (Russian is currently not the most critical), payed retroactively after making a B or higher in the course. Cadets must be on contract and scholarship/language major cadets are still eligible to apply. As far as I can tell, it's in the pot of money that's first to be cut if needed, so it is not always offered.

Talking about Russian specifically, there are some really incredible Russian Project GO programs throughout the country! However, I was supposed to go abroad to Moscow last summer and got an email saying that the DoD would no longer fund our program so we were staying home. As far as I know that is still true this year. I still had a great experience in my domestic program, but keep in mind that these things happen. I received a living stipend with my Project GO scholarship that comfortably covered food, rent, and entertainment in my program's city as well as FLSPB afterwards.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is LEAP, the Air Force Cultural and Language Center's Language Enabled Airmen Program. Check out this article about what a Polish-speaking medical officer was able to do with the program: Langley Airman to polish her Polish. Currently, cadets need a 1+/1+ in Russian to apply in the fall of their senior year, which would be easy for a fluent speaker to achieve.

Scout: I wanted to thank you for broadening my vocabulary. I am not sure how many other posters will admit this, but I will fully admit that this dumb Marine had no idea what you were speaking about when mentioning the relative "cachet" between universities. I was motivated to seek out an online dictionary to learn what this mysterious quality was. Thanks.

My pleasure ;)
