2020 Hopefuls

On Tuesday, DS had his BGO interview. Almost done with Noms and preparing to take the ACT in a couple of weeks. Now on to Plan B and C, D etc.
I can't thank everyone on this forum enough for their knowledge and support.

I have an LOA, but I still need a nom and a medical waiver.

A few questions: does having an LOA help in any way with getting a nomination? (Does the congressman or the nominations board see that you have an LOA?)
My medical condition (myopia >8.00) should be waiverable as it is a common condition and my eyesight is only .37 above 8.00. Again, will an LOA help with expediting the waiver process?

Thanks for your help in advance!

USNA2020,

I am not positive about the LOA helping with nominations, but I believe a few BGOs were saying that it does help a little bit on another thread. As many have said on this forum, just continue to go through the nominations process as if you didn't have the LOA.

I received a DQ from DoDMERB at the end of August for history of shoulder dislocations and subsequent labrum repair surgery. I received my waiver from USNA the first week of September. I know nothing about myopia, but from my limited experience I would say it does help expedite the waiver process if you are an extremely competitive candidate, as I'm sure you are if you received an LOA. I didn't have an LOA, but I did receive an early appointment.

Every MOC is different, some the LOA will help and others it might not matter. Each MOC does their interviews differently and what they look for therefore is unique to each MOC. They obviously all want a highly qualified candidate that will go on and represent them well. USNA usually sends the LOAs to MOCs. Highly recommend you contact the MOCs and ask if they have received a copy, if not, go ahead and send them a copy.

As to expediting a waiver, no one knows. It is case by case dependent. I have no idea if the medical officer even sees who has LOAs or not. They may just get a pile of waiver requests that they review. None of us know. What happens for one person, might get the opposite result for another. All you can do at this point is prepare for your interviews, continue to work hard at school, keep in shape, work on plan B and C.

I wouldn't just send in an LOA to a MOC....you need to ask if that is something their SA board would consider when reviewing packages. Again, some MOCs might think very highly of LOAs and others might not give two cents and would like each candidate to compete on their own merits, regardless of what the SA thinks. Just sending in one could give off the "I am better than you" attitude. Better to ask.

Best case: you didn't give off a bad taste (inadvertently) of who you are by communicating first
Worst case: an extra phone call or email; or lack of communicating leads to false perception

Good point bgo 08. Guess I was inferring that piece, but good clarification.

I knew that you were implying (and knew) that...but I am sure someone in internet land would have said, "oh I will just send you one then" or just would have sent one in.

4 months ago, people on this thread said I had no chance, go do something else. Etc. so far I am qualified medically and just took CFA and passed. My application will be reviewed, and I hopefully qualify scholastically. For those who have "no chance" don't listen to people who said to you. By putting in effort, you put yourself in the running for a spot. That's my pep talk for the usma, usna class of 2020 hopefuls. Hopefully I see you on r-day or I-day!

DS is a reapplicant
How has it been going at whichever prep school he is at/the application process? Do you know anything about what "Candidate Academic Information" should be uploaded? Anything else about reapplying?

He's doing real well at MMI. He's done everything he can do. Waiting on submission of cfa and will submit transcript at the end of the semester

It's my understanding that they don't look at college students until after first semester grades are submitted but I may be wrong about that.

I have heard the same from multiple sources that the Re applicants to not get looked at at all until first semester grades are in.

Marion Military Institute in Marion, AL. It is a two year college with a Service Academy Prep program

Update: nom packets in....ROTC scholarship 1/2 way there...common app and plan B and C in motion.

Was wondering how kids are getting LOA and BFEs already? My son has had his full application, passed DODMERBs and the BOG interview complete since September 1. He attended the summer seminar and was a drag at the CV in Sept. Waiting for Congressional Nomination interviews as he applied to 4. I am going to get an ulcer over this waiting!!! LOL We got a TWE for an upcoming event locally and we didn't know it before we opened it and I thought my son was going to pass out! Thank GOD it was just an invite to the event! The USNA or USAFA is all my son has ever wanted since he was 5 years old and wants a life long career with the military. Can anyone share how they are getting these items so soon-LOA and BFE?? Please let us know if they are presidential nominations that helped you as many of us do not qualify under this. Thanks for your help and feed back! To those who got in already......embrace the gift you earned it and thank you for serving our country!
