2020 Hopefuls

@FalconsRock: Thank you for the info.. Is there a link for the details of ED binding which indicates what you said?
Each college is different, but you can go to collegeboard.org for an explanation of ED and EA applications; do a Google search too. Go to your DS specific college or university website and there should be a definition there as well. You can only apply to one ED school.

Some schools will let you out of ED for a few reasons. They will have to "release" you. I think it's very school dependent. Speaking from personal experience.

@skismuggs: Do you mind to share the info with more details? What are the few reasons? What are the schools? Thanks.
Soccer98, I know that one reason they may release you is if you do not have enough money to pay for the college and if it would cause financial hardship to attend. Getting chosen to attend another school is not one of the criteria. In fact, if you register to a college ED, you cannot register ED for any other college. I'm not sure why you keep pushing the issue, but why would you even take a chance of applying ED to a certain college and apply to an SA. Your DS may end up being appointed and not being able to attend because he is committed to the ED college. Not a chance I would encourage my DD to take at all.

Dadx4,

I hope you realize that LOA's will continue to be issued all fall, and more importantly, the nomination process---at least the interviews and actual nomination---has not yet begun for most of us. My kid doesn't have the congressional interviews until November. This is far from over. Your daughter is definitely still in the mix!
Thanks 2020 Parent. No, I think she was passed over. Her application was complete in late August, and it didn't get reviewed again. It looks like the examiners screen applicants and send up the ones that are competitive to be briefed at the board.

Dadx4, she is def. still in the mix! LOAs are given to such a small percentage of appointees. The majority of the application reviews don't begin until after the MOC nomination deadline. MOCs don't have to have their slates in until January 31st. When you daughter receives a nomination, she will be evaluated and compared to the other 9 candidates on her slate, if she is top, she will get an appointment. If she isn't top, she is still in the mix, because then she will go to the national pool and compete nationally for any remaining appointment slots. (MOC appts, Pres appts, ROTC appts, etc do not add up to the class size required to fill a class). Unless she has a letter in hand for USNA that she was denied an appointment, she is still being considered.

My DS is definitely feeling the stress of filing ED versus RD. He has 4 year NROTC in hand and knows the admissions rate of his top school is 25 percent Early Decision versus 8 percent Regular Decision. It kind of feels like a very high stakes game at this point.

We had a discussion with the financial aid department of DS' top school and a guidance counselor about the NROTC scholarship and ED1. They said IF, for example, DS end up being NOT medically waived for his scholarship ( or loses it for any other reason) , that would end up being sufficient to get out of an ED1 contract. We cannot afford the 64k tuition of this college otherwise. The ED contract states that if the financial aid/scholarship is not sufficient to afford tuition, then that is the only way applicant can get break it. I think the wording of the ED contract is unique to every college. That being said, if DS gets into USNA, he is not allowed to break ED1. Our deadline looms and stress is about to break us!

This is exactly what I was talking about earlier. ED is an agreement to go to that school if accepted and to not apply ED or EA to any other school. You can't just walk away if a better offer comes along, unless you have financial hardship. I am sorry to hear that your DS is in that predicament and I truly believe that it will all work out one way or another. Take some deep breaths and let go of the things you cannot control. Good luck to your DS.

Was wondering how kids are getting LOA and BFEs already? My son has had his full application, passed DODMERBs and the BOG interview complete since September 1. He attended the summer seminar and was a drag at the CV in Sept. Waiting for Congressional Nomination interviews as he applied to 4. I am going to get an ulcer over this waiting!!! LOL We got a TWE for an upcoming event locally and we didn't know it before we opened it and I thought my son was going to pass out! Thank GOD it was just an invite to the event! The USNA or USAFA is all my son has ever wanted since he was 5 years old and wants a life long career with the military. Can anyone share how they are getting these items so soon-LOA and BFE?? Please let us know if they are presidential nominations that helped you as many of us do not qualify under this. Thanks for your help and feed back! To those who got in already......embrace the gift you earned it and thank you for serving our country!
We are in the same boat here..everything
complete "pending review". Waiting is hard. My DS went on athletic visit so we are waiting to hear on several fronts.

How long does it take to become triple qualified? I have been "complete pending review" for a week. When do they review?

You won't necessarily know when you have been reviewed. Also while you may see folks getting 3Q letters at USMA, that does not happen at USNA. And just because you have been reviewed and a score has been given, doesn't mean they will make a decision on your package. MOC slates aren't due until 1/31, so a decision on your slate might not happen until after that date. All you can do is sit back and wait. This is a long ride and there are many more "waits" along the way if a the military service is your path in life. Right now 1/C Midshipman at USNA are less than 10 days from their service assignments. This could determine the next 30 years of their lives. Then they wait again to pick their ships, then wait again for their flight school dates, then wait again for new assignments every 2-3 years, wait again for school/command selections. These are just a handful of the things you will wait on that can drastically impact your life in the service down the road. Waiting is a huge part of it. Look at it as part of learning how to deal with the stress and unknown for these future waits. Good luck to everyone, hang on for the ride. In the meantime, get in shape, work on your other back up options, spend time with family. July comes before you know it!
