How difficult is it to get advanced standing? I will be joining as a sophomore majoring in Aerospace Engineering. Since I am transferring schools, my GPA will start over, so I don't know that it would be of the most relevance to this question right now. I know this is a difficult major, but I am just wanting some insight into advanced standing. I have already started my scholarship application, but I am just trying to explore my options. If you have any stats, I would love to see them!

As long as you perform well academically and in the NROTC program, and the Navy needs additional new officers (which isn't always the case) you should be able to get advanced standing.

Thanks for that information!

Thank you for the stats. It seems like the odds are pretty even on that front. Seeing the numbers really helps me to understand what the chances are.

This is very interesting. Thanks, @Go Dores! This strikes me as a very small total number with very high odds for recommended applicants.

Is it know whether those odds come about by the fact that

1.) very few (essentially one per NROTC school) are recommended OR
2.) very few stay through the end of the second year?

Also assume this is Naval specific. Correct?

Yes, those numbers are NROTC Navy Option.

Just looked at the list again....multiple Advanced Standings awarded within the same program (one school had 8 AS awards). I think the lower total number also has to do with the increased sideload scholarships being awarded as a result of the move to precision loading. And would agree that your #2 is a factor as well.

In the end, if you are in good standing with the NROTC unit and have the grades (avg GPA for the 2-year AS was 3.14/avg GPA for 1-year AS was 3.02), selecting mids for AS is a win for the Navy - we brought in an Officer at very little cost.

I’m aware this is an old thread, but does major tier affect advanced standing chances? I would assume tier 1 and 2 majors would be given priority, correct? Also, would a lower gpa in a technical major (say a 3.0) be looked on more favorably than a higher gpa in a tier 3? (Say a 3.7)

Major will matter for advanced standing. I wouldn't say tier 1 and 2 get priority, but that it is a factor in their assessment. Same with GPA. You can't really look at these things in isolation. It's the entire package that matters, including your progress on completing academic requirements (physics and calc). STEM major is better but not determinative. Same with GPA. And, yes, leadership etc. are big factors too.

@Go Dores! Where are you finding the lists/numbers?
While I left command of a NROTC unit last year, I am still very involved in mentoring local HS students on the program. I ask directly (to my former unit or NSTC); sometimes I get the information and sometimes I don't. I imagine the well will dry up at some point.

@kinnem correct in that the entire package matters. But because we all love stats.

From Summer 2020 Advanced Standing Boards:
Class of 2021 1-year AS results - 10/10 were Tier 3 majors.
Class of 2022 2-year AS results - 42/66 were Tier 3 majors. And the 1-year Provisional AS was a Tier 3.

Helpful instruction to review as it relates to NSTC approach to managing the percentage of tech majors (Tiers 1/2) among scholarship Navy Option midshipmen.
