AFROTC LEAD (Field Training) Bag Drag

Sorry for what is probably a simple question . . . . what's a DG Hunter???

DG = Distinguished Grad.

Many want that because it will help them for their career from an OML perspective. It is the top of the top.

My DS went rated. He was not DG, but top 10%. That meant when he went up for the rated board he got more points. I can't recall the breakdown, but it is pretty much. DG, top 10. top 20, top 30, top 50, 50 and below. They get points for where they stand. This will than be added in with other aspects like AFOQT. CGPA. CoC rank, PFA.
~ If you want rated and have no flight hours than it can be a make or break from getting UPT and UNT.
~ If you want ENJJPT and not straight UPT it can matter there too.

DG can be a factor depending on your career path. In the end as AS300's for rated or AS400s how you ranked out of SFT aka LEAD can impact your 4 yrs as an ADAF regarding your career field.
~ Top 50% out of SFT/LEAD and top 50% in the unit with a 2.8 non-tech major may find that they will get their 2nd choice and not their 1st. Not to fear because the slate is wiped clean at their training school once ADAF. There are many that become shining stars at training even compared to those DGs. Simple reason why is they have hit their stride and understand it is about the job more than whatever your major was in college.

So many things to say

It WILL happen, no probably.
~ Just like in the corporate world. Your BOSS will yell at you when you screw up.
~~ The difference is in the corporate world lives at are not at risk to the rate they are in any military career. Please tell me how if you mess up at Apple or Google how someone may die due to your mistake.

Both will bring you out on the carpet. Both will scream at you. Trust me. I have been just an ADAF wife for 21 yrs and now an ADAF Mom, but during those years I have been yelled at by bosses for my FUBAR.

Being yelled at is not at a bad thing. If you are like me, you take it in, and say MY BAD. You learn real quick that you never want to be in that situation again.

I get you are saying that you accept the yelling, but also want to understand where to correct your mistakes.

I also get old school and new school. I just go back to my last post. How many of these cadets (AFROTC is @800+ that go rated) will now be in for some major pain via rated. UPT IPs are typically called grey beards. IOWS they are about to get out. They will still be old school. They remember being yelled at and told on a weekly basis they are the bottom of the barrel. There is no cheering at UPT, and UPT is 54 weeks. UNT is 49 weeks. Not sure about RPA. You don't get unless you are an OMG stud.

IF SFT has watered it down to the point that they no longer yell at students, than how will they survive SERE, Water Survival, let alone UPT/UNT/RPA?

I am not trying to be rude, unkind or mean. I am just saying. I wonder why at all they pay all of this money out of the AFROTC budget to do LEAD. I am being honest, tell me what you walked away with in the end that could not have been done at your det?
~ Think about the money for a second. How much does it cost to fly a cadet from Alaska to Maxwell? Now multiply that by what? 1900 cadets around the nation?

Sorry, but I believe the AF is doing harm to these cadets. I believe they need to feel the pain in every way. Not the...Well, let me 1st state, you are a great cadet, BUT you messed up here.

Again, LMAO. I work corporate and have for probably as long as you have been alive. I can GUARANTEE you that the multiple corporations I have worked for will GET IN YOUR FACE for screwing up. We, just like younger officers will stand up straight and take it in the face. Apologize and walk out of the office with our butts looking like ground meat!
~ If you don't think that is the actual civilian workforce than you are mistaken. That or the people you use as an example walk on water.
~~ I have been promoted and recognized nationally, but I still get my butt chewed off when I screw up...how do I know I am in trouble. Pima, close the door. I take it. I accept it and I move on.

The idea that you walk in the OLD school is gone is a FALLACY. Your O5 when you entered was raised in the OLD school. Maybe in 20 yrs the NEW will exist, but that is also going to be in select fields, right now those CCs are OLD. They were raised with the screaming, hence to me this is going to harm the cadets when they commission.

mil.intel. do you knew what a SNAP or SNAW is. I am assuming you are going Intel. If you go fighter intel you will know real quick.

I respect your experience and knowledge in many aspects of life, including both the military and the civilian side, and I appreciate the feedback. No, I am an Electrical & Computer Engineering and want to go into developmental engineering. Like you said, I don't mind being yelled at - perhaps a better way to put it is that I stay level-headed in chaotic situations (which is what my FTO put on my final feedback). I certainly learn from my mistakes and never make the same mistake again.

Also like someone mentioned, there WERE yelling - just worded as "elevation of voice" from 0400 until 2100. Overall, LEAD provided to be a learning experience that could not have been practiced at my det (since my det is very small) and helped me with my leadership roles and command presence.

My son was there and from his few stories there was a lot of yelling. And knife hands. From my old man perspective some of it sounded like a power trip.

.

I agree with this 100%.

I was honestly disappointed (but I knew it was coming) when I got off the bus and I felt the low intensity of things. Heck, even my honor guard program at my detachment was louder and more physically demanding at times. All in all, I understand where you are getting at Pima. And I'm not trying to be mean or anything either when I say this but I saw a lot of people who became POCs who I felt personally didn't deserve it. At all.

We had a guy in our flight who barely knew how to march, was selfish with a horrible attitude and still made it through without getting chewed out that bad, or even at all!

All I'm saying is, it's sad that this is all we have to do to become POCs.

A cadet who hunts for a Distinguished Grad award by undermining the efforts of other cadets when it's their turn at command.

We had so many of those. Ironically, I was told by my FTO that we are supposed to consistently raise our hand immediately which I was a little confused because I wanted to give the flight commander a few seconds to think. I mean something as easy as "halt" then "cover" when the flight commander barely has time to say "cover," hands go up everywhere. I was like, seriously? Let the flight commander think and learn from his mistakes. I was surprised that one of the expectations our FTO set out was basically saying to step on toes.

DD just graduated Max 3 yesterday. Yay. She said there WAS yelling but nothing personal and mostly all deserved and nothing she couldn't deal with. Apparently she slipped on some water in the line and face planted in the dining hall, plates, glasses, etc., going one way and her body the other. Sure sounds like that became a moment for her memory bank. As a side note, I went through BMT myself (enlisted) back in the very early 80s when the military was a little sterner and there really wasn't crazy yelling then either, but then again, I knew how to keep a low profile then.

I appreciate that this is a military related board...but this post was like a foreign language to me. I'm not sure if you are talking about the IRS tax code, tire pressure or giving away our national secrets. :)

Haha! I agree. And a lot of the acronyms used aren't in the Acronym List provided in the forum. :)
