AFROTC vs. USAFA

New policy for FY13. If you have your PPL or greater, they are waiving the IFS requirement. I hope they continue that in FY14!

Excellent. On a side note; you do know you're going to have to change your avatar and possibly screen name. Going to start referring to you as "DOC". Just gotta do it. LOL! :thumb: Congrats...

Lol. Oh I know. Your son is enjoying his surfing times in Venice, but he'll be just as tired of school by the time he's in my shoes! Ready to get to the jet already!

To add a little to the fighter opportunity discussion, the very small numbers in each class can make for some very interesting drops when it comes time to get a fighter. Your choices as well as those of your classmates can ping-pong the drop list all over the place.

Real life examples:

Base #1 has 5 guys in T-38s:
AETC Drops to them: 2-F-16s, one A-10, one B-52, one T-6 FAIP.
#1 gets his second choice of F-16 because there is not an F-22 available.
#2 had the A-10 ranked on his list higher than the F-16 so he gets the A-10.
#3 is married and just had a baby so wife wants him to stay at XL so he takes the FAIP.
#4 gets the other F-16
#5 gets the B-52.

Base #2 has 6 guys in T-38s but three are international:
AETC drops them: one F-22, one U-28, and one T-6 FAIP.
Therefore the #2 and #3 guys do not even have a chance for a fighter, where at the other base the #4 guy got the same plane as the #1 guy.

It is all a matter of luck and timing to get a fighter at all. The only way to (almost) guarantee it is to be #1 in your class and hope.

Yea, I don't see him doing much surfing in Columbus Mississippi. But he is a certified diver, so he'll be able to at least get into some water. Hee Hee.

Quick question. My DS currently does not want to fly. But he might get bite by the bug. We shall see. He is 6'3" tall. I'm assuming he could not fly fighters even if he wanted to (too tall). Correct?

Dependent upon his sitting height, not his total height.

Aggie83's response is correct -- it all depends on sitting height. Tell him to learn to slouch!

I've known a bunch of guys during my 20+ years in fighters who were 6' 3" or taller. Tell him now if he does go that route and gets one, expect the Call Sign of either "Chewie" or "Mongo". All the tall guys seem to get one of those call signs -- I guess what we lack in originality we make up with hubris!

One of them if I am correct is called Flieger.

As stated it is easy enough to slouch!

HaHa, I had to laugh.

When my son, who is knocking on the door of 6'-5", went for his Flight Physical the Doc looked at him and said "You know, there is no reason to sit with such good posture"

Flying Fighters for the AF or Navy was out of the question, Helicopters seemed the next logical step for him, although there's not a lot of room in some of those either.

Our youngest is 6'4 and our eldest is 5'10. A few yrs back when we were at church and the boys were sitting next to each other they were level with each other. DS1 is all body, DS2 is all legs, even at 6'4 he wouldn't have to slouch. Now finding enough room in the cockpit for his legs would be a different story!

As others have stated it is all about sitting height. It usually is more problems for females. DS's 2 female friends that got rated slots learned this very quickly. One was waived, but can only fly non-ejection seat air framed, one is now a maintenance officer because they wouldn't waive her sitting height.

My buddy at Soesterberg AB was an eagle driver; F15; and he was quite tall. They called him Lurch. And to be honest, he sort of looked like him. LOL

I'm only 6'2" but let's NOT talk about my sitting height...
(I know how to slouch)

Suffice it to say, the backseat of a T-38 and I do NOT like each other!

Now the Eagle...PLENTY of room!:thumb:
