Hi,

As many of you know, lots of engineering majors require you to complete a civilian internship as part of the course. My question is, can I do both AFROTC (possibly on scholarship) and an internship in my junior year of college? (For example, a degree in Manufacturing Engineering requires a degree with a 3rd party company.)

I realize the point of an internship is to gain experience and then go work with that company, but I plan on having a military career. Any ideas? Thank you.

Yes you can.

I am a junior civil engineering student in AROTC. I have had an internship at the Army Corps of Engineers for a little over a year now. I know that isn't the branch you will commission into, but my USACE district actually does more work on Air Force installations than Army posts. Most of the internships are geared toward civil engineering students at my district, but there may be some other opportunities that are more closely related to your major. Best of luck!

My daughter is doing one this summer for Northrup Grumman. Can you do the internship during the summer months?

If your school requires you to do an internship as part of a course, then the detachment there will be very familiar with it and you can talk with them about it. When I was in AFROTC as a 4 yr scholarship cadet awhile ago (85-89), I did internships every summer I could including working one in around my 4 week summer camp. My school didn't require it and the cross-town detachment non-Engineering cadre had some issues with it, but the one engineering cadre officer thought it was a great idea and it gave me a lot of experience. I would encourage you getting internships but be upfront with the companies and the cadre as I know times have changed as my son is on a current 4 yr scholarship and has to do Ops AF in summers.
